  • The unsung

    Open Access•Paul Crosby, R D Davies et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2026•References: 30

Australian session musicians are typically only remunerated for their work with one-off fixed fee payments, without entitlement to ongoing royalties that are often paid to session musicians in other countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Defining session work related to either (1) non-featured performances on sound recordings, or (2) soundtrack recordings, this study examines session remuneration based on a survey o…

  • No such thing as a free movie? Cross-country evidence on the potential impact of Avod streaming services

Open Access•Jordi Mckenzie, Paul Crosby et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economics•2025

This study investigates potential disruption from advertising-based video-on-demand (AVOD) streaming for new-release in-home films. Using stated-preference discrete choice experiments on representative samples from four major countries, we model demand and examine substitution patterns between AVOD and the incumbent transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) model. In addition, we consider illegal streaming alternatives, including the possibility of us…

  • The reel deal? An experimental analysis of perception bias and AI film pitches

Open Access•Paul Crosby, Jordi Mckenzie•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economics•2025

Artificial intelligence (AI) is creating significant disruption in many creative industries, including the film industry. With increase in levels of investment in sophisticated AI technologies, film studios can potentially replace, or at least reduce, traditional roles of film professionals. Not surprisingly, such moves have been met with vocal opposition from industry associations and labor unions. In the discourse of such debate, however, limit…

  • Coagents as intermediaries in the book industry

    Open Access•Paul Crosby, Jordi Mckenzie•ARTICLE•Poetics•2024•References: 10

This study investigates the use of coagents in the book industry. To reach international markets, domestic publishers typically license a title's rights to third-party international publishers, a practice known as 'selling rights'. Rights sellers can either choose to work directly in a local market or with intermediaries known as coagents. Using a data set of over 2000 international rights sales for Australian-authored titles of a major publisher…

  • Architect

Eleanor Jolliffe, Paul Crosby•BOOK•Architect: The evolving story of…•2023

The architect’s role is constantly adapting. Throughout history it has shifted significantly, shaped by social, cultural, technological and economic forces. The very definition of what an architect is and does has evolved over time from lead builder or master mason to principal designer. A collaborative and reactive profession, it is inextricably linked to the power of the patron, whether the client is an influential and affluent individual or a …

  • Survey evidence on the impact of Covid-19 on Australian musicians and implications for policy

Paul Crosby, Jordi Mckenzie•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 1

This study provides survey evidence concerning how COVID-19 has impacted Australian musicians. Between June and July 2020, we surveyed 203 musicians about the effects of the pandemic on their employment and income. Using a Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) model, we investigate sentiment concerning future employment and income opportunities. We find evidence that this sentiment correlates most strongly with general sentiment about industry dem…

  • Social inferences concerning male and female homeowners who use a gun to shoot an intruder

    Open Access•Nyla R Branscombe, Paul Crosby et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1993•References: 20

Two experiments were performed to test the hypothesis that gender stereotypes influence social inferences about homeowners who use a gun to shoot an intruder. It was predicted that homeowners who violate stereotypical norms would be perceived more negatively, and would be perceived as more responsible for the consequences of their weapon use than would homeowners of both genders who represent stereotype-consistency. The data from the first experi…

  • A three-factor scale of attitudes toward guns

    Open Access•Nyla R Branscombe, Julie A Weir et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1991•References: 21

Guns figure prominently in American culture. There is, however, considerable variability in attitudes toward guns. The beliefs and feelings that comprise attitudes toward guns may well be important moderators of numerous social behaviors. For this reason, a three-dimensional attitudes scale was constructed. The first factor consists of an abstract set of beliefs concerning the right of the American public to own or not own guns. The second and th…
