  • Business as usual? Small business responses to compound disasters in coastal New York city and New Jersey

Open Access•Katherine Cann, Robin Leichenko et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2025

Small businesses serve critical functions in community disaster recovery, providing essential goods and services, employment, and gathering spaces during times of crisis. However, many small businesses face escalating threats to their continued operation as they confront compound disasters. These critical functions and growing risks are especially evident among food-related small businesses, which provide vital goods and services to local communi…

  • Relaxing Credit and Information Constraints

Abdulrazzak Tamim, Aurélie P Harou et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2025•References: 24

Low fertilizer use by smallholder farmers continues to limit crop yields in sub-Saharan Africa. We return in 2019 and find that effects dissipate after the subsidy is discontinued. Our follow-up results suggest that credit constraints s…

  • How does delegating decisions to communities affect the provision and use of a public service? Evidence from a field experiment in Bangladesh

Open Access•Malgosia Madajewicz, Anna Tompsett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 6

However, whether community participation enhances provision and use of public services relative to a non-participatory approach is largely unknown because few studies compare impacts when the same public service intervention is implemented with and without community participation. This field experiment comp…

  • Evidence of Demand for Index Insurance

Michael Norton, Daniel E Osgood et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2014

We present results of experimental games with smallholder farmers in Tigray, Ethiopia, in 2010, in which participants in the games allocated money across risk management options. One of the options was index insurance that was the same as commercial products sold locally. Participants exhibited clear preferences for insurance contracts with higher frequency payouts and for insurance over other risk management options, including high interest savi…
