Reflections on the State of the World
If the world is in a moment of upheaval, what that upheaval looks and feels like depends a lot on where you are. In this collection of Dispatches, we invited writers, scholars, and thinkers from Oslo, Guatemala City, Cape Town, Canberra, Moscow, Chennai, and Jerusalem to reflect on what the state of the world looks like from where they are sitting. What are the most defining issues? What is the mood where you live? And what might the future hold
The labour market effects of cash transfers to the unemployed
Characterisation, definition, and measurement issues of the middle class in sub-Saharan Africa
In this study, we evaluate how both the definition of middle class and the dataset considered affect the estimated size of the middle class in sub-Saharan Africa. By considering the feasibility of a single definition of a middle class for all African countries based on the World Bank’s PovcalNet database, we estimate the size of this segment for a selection of countries. As part of the regional analysis, we follow with a country and city case stu…
Crime, Income, and Inequality
How might South Africa's concentrated income inequality affect the incidence of burglary? Theoretically, burglary increases with income and inequality, but the linearity of these relationships can be interrupted by investment in private security. This idea has not been thoroughly tested before, and South Africa presents an interesting context in which to do so, given its high level of income inequality and fear of crime. We find both income and i…
Income Inequality Trends in sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) recorded a remarkable economic performance in the first 15 years of the 21st century. Such an encouraging trend, which reversed the stagnation or decline of the prior 25 years, was accompanied by a perceptible, modest, but uneven decline in aggregate poverty, together with substantial cross-country variation in the poverty-reducing power of growth. This is reflected in, and partially driven by, the variation of inequality…
Bill Freund. Twentieth-Century South Africa
Bill Freund, one of the grandmasters of South African economic historiography, has once again produced a piece of breathtaking analytical insight and focus. Twentieth-Century South Africa: A Developmental History is crafted around the historical origins of industrialization broadly, and the manufacturing industry in particular, in South Africa. Freund’s work is injected with a particular political focus, reminding the reader that context, politic…
Demographic, employment, and wage trends in South Africa
This paper looks to uncover the growth traps and opportunities for the South African economy, with a focus on underlying labour market dynamics. We explore the potential of South Africa’s demographic dividend. We also consider the structure of the labour market and the growth-employment interactions, which uncover the skills-biased labour demand path of the economy and a rising trend in the use of labour brokers to source temporary workers. Final…
