  • Creating, Testing, and Applying Social Psychological Theories

    Bernard P Cohen•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•2003•Cited by: 2

I am highly honored to receive the 2002 Cooley-Mead Award, and I want to thank my collaborators, both colleagues and students, who made this possible. I don't have enough time to acknowledge all the people from whom I learned so much and who stimulated the social psychological work that I have done. I would be remiss, however, if I did not mention the people most significant to my work and my development. I owe my colleagues at Stanford-Joe Berge…

  • Status Processes in Enduring Work Groups

    Bernard P Cohen, Xueguang Zhou•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1991•Cited by: 36•References: 3

We examine the impact of team, organizational, and societal status characteristics on interaction patterns in long-term work groups. Data are from 2077 respondents representing 224 research and development teams drawn from 29 large corporations. Hypotheses based on status characteristic theory are supported: Both external (organizational and societal) and internal (team) status characteristics affect team interaction. When status within a team is…

    Bernard P Cohen, Ronald J Kruse et al.•ARTICLE•The Pacific Sociological Review•1982•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This research developed an abstract conceptualization of the social structure of scientific research teams and empirically investigated its utility. Two typologies formed the basis of the conceptualization: A typology of teams and a typology of leadership roles. The concepts were operationalized using questions on a self-administered questionnaire and indices derived from those questions. The responses of 150 principal investigators of research t…

  • Eliminating Status Generalization

    Lee Freese, Bernard P Cohen•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1973•Cited by: 38

In small, task-focused groups undifferentiated in power and prestige, previous research has shown that introducing a status difference among group members generates observable differences in power and prestige even at tasks not obviously related to the status characteristic. A social psychological theory is presented which shows that this generalization effect can be arrested if actors are simultaneously discriminated by performance attributes wh…

  • Status Characteristics and Social Interaction

Joseph Berger, Bernard P Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1972•Cited by: 380

This paper discusses the small groups literature on status organizing processes in decisionmaking groups whose members differ in external status. This literature demonstrates that status characteristics, such as age, sex, and race determine the distribution of participation, influence, and prestige among members of such groups. This effect is independent of any prior cultural belief in the relevance of the status characteristic to the task. To ex…

  • Reactions to Inequity

    Open Access•Bo Anderson, Joseph Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1969•Cited by: 23•References: 1

The theory of distributive justice is concerned with the way in which socially valued rewards, such as salaries, promotions, or special privileges, get allocated to members of a social system. The two basic notions are: (1) individuals have what they regard as legitimate expectations about how rewards shiould be allocated, and (2) if such expectations are violated there is both strain and pressures for social change. In considering injustice or i…

    Bernard P Cohen•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1958•Cited by: 2

Asch (1, 2, 3) has developed an experimental procedure which provides an excellent means of testing current conceptions of the nature, genesis, and correlates of conformity. design requires an individual to make a sequence of judgments of unambiguous stimuli in the presence of confederates instructed to give incorrect responses. procedure produces conformity under highly controlled conditions; it meets the requirements of reliable measurement and…
