Catching Up and Falling Behind in Selected Latin American Countries
This article examines and compares the economic growth trajectories of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico from 1950 to 2019. Using a classical-Marxian approach, we explore the region’s economic performance. Latin America was one of the most dynamic regions in the global economy during the golden age of 1945–1973. However, during neoliberalism, most Latin American countries fell behind. Our analysis reveals that these nations are locke…
Productive and Unproductive Sectors’ Interactions in Brazil
This article employs Miyazawa’s method to investigate the interaction between productive and unproductive sectors during the 2002–2014 period in Brazil. The results showed a growing dependence of productive on unproductive sectors together with a rise in the unproductive share in the economy, particularly after 2008. Our findings stressed the relationship between the rising importance of unproductive industries and lower total output growth, as e…
Racial Inequality in the Twenty-first Century
This article presents a set of comparative data related to racial inequality in the United States and Brazil throughout the twenty-first century. Within the limitations of available data, we highlight four limited but important dimensions, that is, demography, education, the labor market, and earnings that illustrate racial inequality in both countries. In doing so, we aim to investigate and critically update Andrews’s work (1992) on the last thr…
Profitability and Distribution
The PT governments combined elements of developmentalism and neoliberalism in a contradictory construction, organizing a large political coalition of workers and capitalists that allowed expanding the real wage and reducing poverty and inequality while maintaining the gains of productive and financing capitals. The decline of profitability after the 2008 crisis broke the class coalition constructed during Lula's administration. The Dilma Rousseff…
