  • Real Wage Heterogeneity and Sectoral Coexistence in Small Open Economies

Open Access•Facundo Barrera Insua, Ariel Dvoskin et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2026

Modern contributions examining trade patterns in small open economies argue that, under a homogeneous wage structure, only one sector, the one affording the highest profit rate, will remain competitive internationally. Yet, empirical evidence shows the persistent coexistence of tradable industries. We contend that wage dispersion influences sectoral profitability and sustains multi-sectoral economies. Using panel data for Argentina’s private sect…

  • An Appraisal of Alternative Ricardian Trade Models

Gabriel Brondino, Ariel Dvoskin•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2023•References: 9

A prevalent feature of the global economy is the relevance of trade in intermediates due to production fragmentation. This phenomenon has led to the revival and development of trade models that include inter-industry relations. A wide variety of Ricardian trade models cope with this feature. In this article, we develop a Sraffa-Leontief framework to compare and appraise these models. The models are distinguished by their underlying theory of dist…

  • Limits to Fiscal and Monetary Policy in Small Open Economies

Ariel Dvoskin, Matías Torchinsky Landau•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 6

In this paper we investigate the impact of the balance-of-payments constraint on output, income distribution and policy space in a small economy open to both commercial and financial flows. We do so by extending a Sraffian supermultiplier growth model to consider current and capital accounts and endogenous money. Expansionary fiscal policies increase output and its long run growth rate but have a negative impact on the balance-of-payments. Based …

  • On Income Distribution Dynamics in Argentina During the 1976–1983 Dictatorship

    Ramiro E Alvarez, Ariel Dvoskin•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The long-lasting, distributive changes in Argentina during the 1970s have been extensively studied from different theoretical perspectives. What has not yet been sufficiently examined, however, are the reasons behind the non-monotonic trends observed on income distribution during this period and, in particular, under the dictatorial regime (1976–83). To fill this gap, we have developed a model inspired in the modern Classical-Structuralist approa…

  • An Assessment of Samuelson’s Ricardo-Sraffa Trade Model

    Gabriel Brondino, Ariel Dvoskin•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article assesses Samuelson’s attempt to introduce Sraffa’s framework of “production of commodities by means of commodities” to the neoclassical-Ricardo trade model. We slightly modify Samuelson’s model to consider, on the one hand, more commodities than countries and, on the other hand, a positive rate of interest and full international (finance) capital mobility. In the first case, comparative advantage is unable to predict the direction of…

  • On the Role of Finance in the Sraffian System

    Ariel Dvoskin, Gerald D Feldman•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 5

We critically review the previous attempts to introduce money and finance into Sraffa's price system and identify the coexistence of two different notions of the interest rate that have not been properly disentangled: the interest rate as an opportunity cost and as an effective cost of production. We argue that the former must be present for the validity of the Monetary Theory of Distribution (MTD), while the latter is necessary to address the in…

  • Exclusion in ‘Ricardian’ Trade Models

Eduardo Alberto Crespo, Eduardo Crespo et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 11

In the so-called ‘Ricardian’ trade models, exclusion from trade is impossible because a country can always compensate its technological backwardness with low wages. This result is ensured in these models due to the very restrictive assumption that production requires unassisted labor alone. The present paper shows that the moment conditions of production realistically consider (a) the presence of capital goods and (b) a positive interest rate und…

  • On the role of the exchange rate as a tool for industrial competitiveness

    Open Access•Ariel Dvoskin, Gerald D Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2020•References: 14

By means of a two-tradable-sector model for an open, price-taking economy inspired by the Classical-Sraffian tradition, which conceives the pattern of trade as a technical-choice problem, we examine some difficulties with the recourse to exchange-rate policy as a tool to promote sectorial competitiveness. To this aim, we distinguish among economies that only produce manufactures from those in which the most profitable sector exploits natural reso…

  • A formal assessment of new-developmentalist theory and policy

    Open Access•Ariel Dvoskin, Gerald D Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 11

We develop a formal framework that endogeneizes the productive structure of a small open peripheral economy as the outcome of a problem of technical choices. We subsequently examine the main theoretical theses and policy prescriptions of the New-Developmentalist approach to economic growth. We argue that: a) not only does the pattern of specialization depend on technical conditions, but also on income distribution; b) in an economy without rents,…

  • On Walras's Concept of Equilibrium

Ariel Dvoskin, Andrés Lazzarini•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The view that Walras's equilibrium concept refers to a temporary general equilibrium with stationary expectations has come to be the conventional opinion within the history of economics. This interpretation overlooks salient aspects of Walras's original equilibrium concept: (i) that it refers to a centre of gravitation, thus equilibrium must be assessed together with the adjustment mechanisms that are supposed to bring the economy towards its pos…
