  • Frozen in Sorrow

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Teksty Drugie•2024

S tudying Holocaust fiction for young readers means touching upon the core characteristics of children's literature.Various critics have identified in children's literature about the Holocaust a crucial dilemma:1 on the one hand, authors and educators cherish the desire to inform readers in a way that does justice to the atrocities of the persecution and genocide of Jewish people and that raises awareness in the young that history must not be rep…

  • Holding Hands

    Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2023•References: 14

Diana Wynne Jones's Fire and Hemlock (1984) and Ali Smith's Autumn (2016) are two British novels that evoke an intense friendship between a girl and an older man. Their experimental narrative forms include a complex chronology, unreliable narrator, dream scenes, gaps, and a rich intertextual network to frame an intergenerational friendship that can be read as intergenerational desire. The experimental narratives and reflections on the fluidity of…

  • A style for every age

Open Access•Wouter Haverals, Lindsey Geybels et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Literature…•2022

In the field of children’s literature studies, much attention has been devoted to investigating differences between children’s and adult literature. Works of crosswriters, authors who write for both readerships in different works, are an excellent source for this research. This article applies stylometry, the computational method of analysing style, to the oeuvres of 10 Dutch and English crosswriters to trace potential differences in their indivi…

  • “You Have to Set the Story You Know Aside”

Open Access•Michelle Anya Anjirbag, Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Humanities•2022

As with other twenty-first-century rewritings of fairytales, Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron complicates the classic ‘Cinderella’ fairytale narrative popularized by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm for new audiences, queering and race-bending the tale in its decidedly feminist revision of the story. However, as we argue here, the novel also provides an interesting intervention in the construction of age as related to gender for its fem…

  • Writing when Young

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Life Writing•2021

Duet met valse noten (1983) started as a diary when Bart Moeyaert was twelve years old. After it was disclosed by an older brother, Moeyaert rewrote it during his teenage years as a novel about first love. This article studies the genesis and early reception of Moeyaert’s novel to reflect on young authors who fictionalize real-life experiences and desires. On the one hand, they are credited for being experts on youth and said to have a particular…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen, Bettina Kümmerling‐meibauer•ARTICLE•Strenae•2021

Over two centuries after the Brothers Grimm started their work on Die Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales, 1812‒1815), their fairy tales have not lost their appeal to readers, authors and, as the contributors in this special issue explore, illustrators. The history of illustrated editions of the Grimms’ tales did not start in Germany – the first German edition had no illustrations, while the second edition of 1815 had just two…

  • Ted van Lieshout’s Daring Approach to Fairytale Illustrations and Texts

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Strenae•2021

The Dutch author and illustrator Ted van Lieshout is famous and perhaps even infamous for his taboo-breaking children’s books. Van Lieshout has also found an original angle for fairy-tale illustrations, which he develops in particular in his short-story collections Driedelig paard (Tripartite Horse) from 2011 and Onder mijn matras de erwt (Under my mattress the pea) from 2017. While in the former, he illustrates the stories with sonnets compiled …

  • Constructing Age for Young Readers

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•International Research in…•2021

Children's literature studies has been relatively slow in adopting techniques from digital humanities. This article explains a method for digitising, annotating, and analysing texts in xml to investigate the implicit age norms that children's books convey. The case studies are seventeen books by Bart Moeyaert and La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman. The analysis of speech distribution, topic modelling, syntactic parsing, and lexical analysis with …

  • Rewriting the Grandmother’s Story

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Fabula•2021

Feminist perspectives have strongly influenced the fairy-tale rewritings of the past decades, but the intersection of gender with other identity markers deserves more attention. This article applies the conclusions of Sylvia Henneberg’s critical examination of age and gender in fairy tales to Gillian Cross’s Wolf (1990), an award-winning rewriting of “Red Riding Hood.” While Wolf presents Nan, the counterpart of Red Riding Hood’s grandmother, as …

Marleen Nelen. “Alles wat licht is” Zwarthemden in het circus Over de aanloop naar de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn al talloze jeugdboeken verschenen, maar het Italiaanse perspectief is daarbij zelden belicht. Daar brengt Alles wat licht is verandering in. Deze adolescentenroman volgt een circus in het Italië van de late jaren twintig, wanneer Mussolini en zijn zwarthemden de samenleving in hun greep krijgen. Het hoofdpersonage, Luca, is ooit als vond…

  • Children’s Literature in Translation

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Humanities•2019

In the Netherlands and Flanders, more or less a fifth of all children’s books are translations. The decision of what gets translated and funded is, for the most part, informed by adults’ decisions. This paper offers a first step towards a more participatory approach to the translation of books for young readers by investigating children’s understanding of translation processes and the criteria that they put forward as desirable for the internatio…

  • Snow White and Her Dedicated Dutch Mothers

    Open Access•Vanessa Joosen•ARTICLE•Marvels & Tales•2014•References: 1

In this essay I depart from Donald Haase’s reflections on the ownership and reception of fairy tales in “Yours, Mine, or Ours” and The Reception of Grimms’ Fairy Tales and apply them to the practice of fairy-tale translators, who played an important role in giving the Grimms’ Kinder- und Hausmärchen its current status as an international classic. I treat these translations, and the Kinder- und Hausmärchen itself, as forms of “written folklore,” A…
