Cross-Cultural Reader Response to Original and Translated Poetry
In recent years, researchers have conducted empirical studies in reader response, which have either contested or confirmed earlier theories. Indeed, the 1970s and 1980s saw the shift from interpreting the page to looking into reading processes, but the studies remained on the level of abstraction. Our study follows the trend towards evidence-grounded investigations by examining real readers' reactions to poetry and innovates by looking into cross…
Quantitative methodological approaches to stylistics
Stylistics, understood as the study of the language of literary texts (Halliday 1967) and a method for textual analysis (Carter 2007, Verdonk 2002), is a product of the twentieth century formalists’ concern for the systematising of literary interpretation (see Jeffries and McIntyre 2010, p. 1). However, since the institutionalisation of literature around the end of the nineteenth century, literary scholars have tended to keep borders between lang…

Complexity and Foregrounding
This article approaches from an empirical perspective the interrelation between foregrounding and complexity in the evaluation of literary texts. For this purpose, a reading experiment is reported. Participants from three cultures (Brazil, Egypt, and the Netherlands) read three texts of different degrees of complexity and evaluated them on a number of variables. Subsequently, they re-read and evaluated the texts once more. The hypothesis was that…
The Unheard Voices
For over 20 years studies in literary theory, linguistics, and semiotics have been contributing with models which describe the role of readers and how they construct the meaning of a literary text. Most of these studies, however, assume an ideal figure who may not necessarily correspond to classroom reality. In this paper I propose a framework which offers a more democratic setting. Cognitively, the model is in line with studies which regard lear…
Stylistics in the EFLit classroom
This article approaches literary discourse from a functional pragmatic perspective which sees literature as an act of communication. From this angle and from an understanding of context of language use, Free Indirect Discourse (FID) can be considered as the mode of speech and thought presentation which best expresses the poliphony of voices in a text and, by implication, the multiplicity of perspectives which modern writing has been exploring for…
Introducing literary awareness
Debates over what to include in the literary canon have reached the point of questioning the validity of literature as a discipline. Proposals to integrate the study of literature within the area of cultural studies have been made. Starting from these postulations, this article reassesses the role of literature in the curriculum. It claims that the questions should centre not on what to teach, but on how to do it. Based on the recent developments…
