Adolescent Misconduct Behaviors
The primary goal of the current study was to examine cultural differences in Chinese and U.S. adolescents' and parents' perceptions and evaluations of adolescent misconduct behaviors. A total of 395 U.S. and Chinese adolescents (ages 11-19 years) and 255 parents participated in this study. Each participant generated adolescent misconduct behaviors and rated each misconduct behavior as to the degree of wrongness. The misconduct behaviors were code…
Evaluating the temporal structure and correlates of daily self-esteem using a trait state error framework (TSE)
This study evaluates the temporal structure of daily self-esteem and the relative contribution of a range of theoretically motivated predictors of daily self-esteem. To assess self-esteem stability, a daily version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale (RSE, Rosenberg, 1965) was administered to 278 undergraduates for five consecutive days. These short-term longitudinal data were analysed using the Trait State Error (TSE) modelling framework. The TSE…

A randomised clinical trial of the effects of spiritually focused meditation for people with metastatic melanoma
This randomised clinical study assessed the effects of spiritually focused meditation (SpM) and secularly focused meditation on adjustment to illness, relative to a control condition for people in treatment for metastatic melanoma (N = 83). Physical and psychological well-being was assessed at baseline, post-intervention, two, and four months later. Meditation home practice was assessed as an additional predictor. Repeated Measures ANOVA found no…
A Unified Latent Curve, Latent State-Trait Analysis of the Developmental Trajectories and Correlates of Positive Orientation
Literature documents that the judgments people hold about themselves, their life, and their future are important ingredients of their psychological functioning and well-being and are commonly related to each other. In this article, results from a longitudinal study (N = 298, 45% males) are presented. Using an integrative Latent Curve, Latent State-Trait Model ( Tisak & Tisak, 2000 ), results corroborated (a) the impressive mean level and rank-ord…

Investigating the Nature of Method Factors Through Multiple Informants
When a self-report instrument includes a balanced number of positively and negatively worded items, factor analysts often use method factors to aid model fitting. The nature of these factors, often referred to as acquiescence, is still debated. Relying upon previous results (Alessandri et al., 2010 Alessandri, G., Vecchione, M., Fagnani, C., Bentler, P. M., Barbaranelli, C., Medda, E. and Caprara, G. V. 2010. Much more than model fitting? Evidenc…

Measurement Error and the Correlation between Positive and Negative Affect
There has been considerable debate in the literature on the structure of affect, especially on the correlation between positive and negative affect and the effect of measurement error on this correlation. In this brief article, it is shown that, as Spearman (1904, 1907) noted, the extent to which the correlation between imperfect measures is attenuated by measurement error depends upon the reliabilities of the measures used
Aira
The current study utilized a structural equations approach in developing an instrument to investigate adolescents’ (N = 510; 9th–12th graders) judgments about the likelihood that they would actively respond to a witnessed aggressive situation. Two aggressive subscales were developed: physical and verbal. The instrument controlled for the relationship (acquaintance vs. friend) of the witness to the perpetrator and to the victim involved in the eve…
Aggression and conventional rule violation among adolescents
The goal of the current study was to determine whether aggressive and conventional rule-violating behaviors could be predicted by social-cognitive beliefs and values regarding aggression and conventional rule violations. The extent to which adolescents (N = 398; grades 9 through 12) engaged in both aggressive behavior and conventional school rule violations was assessed using self-ratings and peer nominations. Results indicated that aggressive an…

The measurement of job control
Subjective or perceived control over job-related activities or events is a frequently measured construct in organizational stress research. Karasek (1985) assessed perceived control as both decision authority and skill discretion at work (job decision latitude). Ganster (1989b; Dwyer and Ganster, 1991) developed a multidimensional or general measure of worker control, as well as a specific measure of work predictability. Because little published …
A Comparison of Bias and Mean Squared Error in Parameter Estimates of Interaction Effects
The results of moderated multiple regression (MMR) are highly affected by the unreliability of the predictor variables (regressors). Errors-in-variables regression (EIVR) may remedy this problem as it corrects for measurement error in the regressors, and thus provides less biased parameter estimates. However, little is known about the properties of the EIVR estimators in the moderator variable context. The present study used simulation methods to…
My Sibling's but Not My Friend's Keeper
This research examined early adolescents' social cognitions about the role a peer plays as a bystander when an aggressor is either a sibling or a friend. One-hundred eleven subjects from 4th, 6th, and 8th grades were posed questions about whether a bystander of an aggressive act would intervene and, if yes, how; whether it would be wrong not to intervene; and in which bystander relationships (sibling or friend) would it be more wrong to ignore th…
A Theoretical Note on the Stochastics of Moderated Multiple Regression
An examination of the stochastics of moderated multiple regression (MMR) reveals that MMR is an appropriate technique when predictors are fixed variables (i.e., values of predictor variables are selected) and the distribution of errors is normal but is not an appropriate technique when predictors are random variables (i.e., values of predictor variables are obtained through random sampling) and the joint distribution of criterion and predictor va…
Determination of the Regression Coefficients and Their Associated Standard Errors in Hierarchical Regression Analysis
Hierarchical regression analysis is potentially a very useful statistical technique for establishing the significance of sets of predictor variables. However, when a hierarchical analysis which is based on theory is performed, some estimation procedures for the regression coefficients and their associated standard errors are potentially inappropriate. Specifically, the hierarchical regression equations, the incremental or hierarchical tests, and …
The measurement properties of the role conflict and role ambiguity scales
The measurement properties of the Rizzo, House and Lirtzman (1970) role conflict and role ambiguity scales have been debated in the research literature for several years. The criticisms are that the scales do not measure separate constructs and are contaminated by method variance. However, some researchers have presented evidence supporting the scales' continued use as independent measures. We attempted to clarify the running debate by re‐examini…
Latent Curve Analysis
As a method for representing development, latent trait theory is presented in terms of a statistical model containing individual parameters and a structure on both the first and second moments of the random variables reflecting growth. Maximum likelihood parameter estimates and associated asymptotic tests follow directly. These procedures may be viewed as an alternative to standard repeated measures ANOVA and to first-order auto-regressive method…
