Against the backdrop of populist attacks on science and sustainable development, the Sustainability Science Summit 2025 focused on advancing sustainability transformations. With over 30 sessions structured around three high-level panel discussions, it addressed global challenges in sustainability science, the transformation of research practices, and the science-policy interface

  • All options, not silver bullets, needed to limit global warming to 1.5 °C: A scenario appraisal

Open Access•Lila Warszawski, Elmar Kriegler et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Climate science provides strong evidence of the necessity of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. The IPCC 1.5 °C special report (SR1.5) presents 414 emissions scenarios modelled for the report, of which around 50 are classified as ‘1.5 °C scenarios’, with no or low temperature overshoot. These emission scenarios differ in their reliance on individual mitigation levers, including reduction of global energy …

  • The human imperative of stabilizing global climate change at 1.5°C

    Open Access•Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Daniela Jacob et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2019

The need to stabilize global climate Climate change will be the greatest threat to humanity and global ecosystems in the coming years, and there is a pressing need to understand and communicate the impacts of warming, across the perspectives of the natural and social sciences. Hoegh-Guldberg et al. review the climate change–impact literature, expanding on the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. They provide evidence of…

  • Interculturalism as treason: Policing, securitization, and neoliberal state formation in Southern Chile

Helene Risør, Daniela Jacob•ARTICLE•Latin American and Caribbean…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 30

This article offers an ethnographic analysis of Patrullas de Acercamiento a Comunidades Indígenas (Indigenous Community Outreach Patrols, or PACI), a community police initiative of the Chilean police. It situates the program within the broader context of democratization, state-sponsored interculturalism, and neoliberal state formation in contemporary Chile. It shows how the burden of establishing intercultural relations falls upon lower-ranking i…

Open Access•Daniela Jacob, Juliane Petersen et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Environmental Change•2014

A new high-resolution regional climate change ensemble has been established for Europe within the World Climate Research Program Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (EURO-CORDEX) initiative. The first set of simulations with a horizontal resolution of 12.5 km was completed for the new emission scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 with more simulations expected to follow. The aim of this paper is to present this data set to the different communitie…

  • The European climate under a 2 °C global warming

Open Access•Robert Vautard, Andreas Gobiet et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

A global warming of 2 C relative to pre-industrial climate has been considered as a threshold which society should endeavor to remain below, in order to limit the dangerous effects of anthropogenic climate change. The possible changes in regional climate under this target level of global warming have so far not been investigated in detail. Using an ensemble of 15 regional climate simulations downscaling six transient global climate simulations, w…

  • Regional characteristics of climate change altering effects of afforestation

Open Access•Borbála Gálos, Csaba Mátyás et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

Climatic effects of forest cover change have been investigated for Hungary. For the time period 2071-100 we have analyzed whether the climate change signal for summer precipitation and the probability of droughts can be reduced assuming maximal afforestation for the entire country (forests covering all vegetated areas). The biogeophysical effects of land cover change have been assessed using the results of an A1B IPCC-SRES emission scenario from …

  • Will the southern African west coast fog be affected by future climate change? Results of an initial fog projection using a regional climate model

Open Access•Andreas Haensler, Jan Čermák et al.•ARTICLE•Erdkunde•2011

We present an initial study to project the long-term development of fog occurrence along the southern African west coast. For this purpose, we implemented a basic fog diagnostic scheme based on liquid water content into the regional climate model REMO. The validation of the fog diagnostic scheme is conducted using satellite-derived low cloud informa-tion as well as local station observations. The validation reveals that REMO is able to adequately…

  • Will dry events occur more often in Hungary in the future

Open Access•Borbála Gálos, Philip Lorenz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2007

Dry years and dry summers in Hungary have been analyzed using the regional climate model REMO for the time periods 1961–2000 and 2001–2100. Dry periods were determined and classified by intensity, considering modeled and observed precipitation and temperature data. The intensity of dry events was defined according to the negative precipitation deviation and positive temperature deviation from the climate period 1961–90. The proportion of dry year…
