Egypt in transition’: Uniting service-learning and short-term study-abroad
Study-abroad has become a popular method for promoting international education in university curricula. Yet, with today’s growing non-traditional student who is older, working, and increasingly a member of a racial/ethnic minority group, traditional study-abroad programmes of a semester or year abroad have become more problematic, if not impossible. Black Students and International Education: An Assessment
Black students participate in international education or study abroad experiences far less than other college students. The reasons, as stated in previous literature, include choice of major, attrition rates, lower levels of social economic affluence, and the lack of encouragement and support. This paper presents a case study of the transfer of a graduate justice studies degree program from traditional instruction to online delivery. The transformation must involve the coordination of several university departments. Online course instruction include…
Career choices and characteristics of African-American undergraduates majoring in criminal justice at historically black colleges and universities
Recent research has shown that African-Americans at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have increasingly selected criminal justice/criminology as their field of study and career choice (Gabbidon and Penn 1999). To explore this trend, the authors replicated the work of Krimmel and Tartaro (1999) by surveying 284 undergraduate criminal justice majors at several HBCUs; the study was designed to investigate whether the students' rea…
