  • Prehistoric Cave Art: From Image to Graphic Narration

    Open Access•Marc Azéma•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2021•References: 1

This article examines cave art in France, arguing that the images created at many sites, but particularly Chauvet, can be analysed in terms of animation, storytelling, lighting and sound. Through superimposition and juxtaposition, and using the contours of the rock face, Palaeolithic artists invented a form of narration based on images, often then animated by the flickering light of lamps and torches. Drawing on semiological work by Philippe Sohe…

  • Animation and Graphic Narration in the Aurignacian

    Open Access•Marc Azéma•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2015

What was the purpose of the images conceived and produced by prehistoric groups? Our research into the animation of these images leads us to propose a new method of analysis that shows their primary function to be narrative. The identification of mechanisms for graphic narration can help to decipher the exact content conveyed by these messages beginning as early as the Aurignacian. The main images from two parietal art caves from this period, Cha…

    Open Access•Marc Azéma•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2015•References: 4

  • Animation in Paleolithic Art: Recent Observations

    Open Access•Marc Azéma, Florent Rivère•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

The images of animals represented by Upper Paleolithic artists are often animated. Sometimes spectacular, sometimes discrete, these movements express precise behaviors whose association within graphic arrangements, on walls or on objects, shows the existence of an original form of graphic narration. Prehistoric humans also conceptualized sequential animation and finally cinematography. Even better, recent observations of Magdalenian portable art …

  • The Decorated Paleolithic Cave of Baume Latrone (France, Gard): 3D Time Travelling

Open Access•Marc Azéma, Bernard Gely et al.•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

Since 2009, a new research program in the cave of Baume Latrone (France, Gard), directed by Marc Azma, has consisted of recording its astonishing parietal images, drawn in clay or engraved on limestone, using a combination of traditional techniques and three-dimensional digitalization. This technological association introduces a fourth dimension into the digital field model by confronting several chronological phases on the wall, which was vandali…

Mie…

  • Animation in Palaeolithic art: A Pre-Echo of Cinema

    Open Access•Marc Azéma, Florent Rivère•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2012•Cited by: 11•References: 3

Marc Azéma a Palaeolithic researcher and film maker has been exploring the representation of animal movement in cave art for more than 20 years, and here shares with us his latest examples, culled from the parietal art in the Chauvet Cave (Ardèche) and La Baume Latrone (Gard). Here he has shown that Palaeolithic artists have invented systems of breaking down movement and graphic narrative. His co-author, Florent Rivère, discovered that animal mov…

The first figures of humanity are basically reproductions of animals. This study (a thesis which is limited to France and parietal art) analyses the animated figures that might, in part, by means of ethology, shed light on the motivation of the Upper Palaeolithic hunter-artists. The ethological approach provides essential tools for the study and comprehension of parietal art. The representation of movement plays a role in the significance of preh…

With sixty-six depictions of mammoths, the Chauvet Cave is the second most important sanctuary with regard to the number of figures of pachyderms. The is often reduced to its essential lines. However, the graphism also, in some cases, attests to a quest for realism, with a relative concern for details but little proportions. Among the more detailed works, for all the species depicted, the aesthetic quality of some seems to be without equivalent t…
