  • Jews Reading Arthurian Romances from the Middle Ages

    Open Access•Rella Kushelevsky•ARTICLE•AJS Review The Journal of the…•2018•References: 1

Evidence of Jewish readerships for French literature in the Middle Ages, particularly romances, has been accumulating. This article focuses on a recently discovered tale from Italy, copied in Hebrew in MS JTS Rab. 1164, as a prism through which to explore the cultural interactions between Jewish and Christian society in Italy of the early Renaissance. I first analyze the Jewish tale, which I posit has an affinity with the Arthurian romance Yvain,…

  • Rabbinic sage stories in Midrashic compilations

    Rella Kushelevsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•2014

The Usha synod narrative in Song of Songs Rabbah (para. 2) is studied in this article both as a carefully composed rabbinic sage story and as a hermeneutical narrative aimed at resolving enigmatic biblical verses through intertextual links between the Song of Songs and the Torah. In line with Boyarin's analysis of intertextual readings in the Song of Songs Rabbah while focusing on a rabbinic sage story rather than on the mashal (analogy), the Ush…

  • Chastity versus Courtly Love in »The Poor Bachelor and His Rich Maiden Cousin«

    Rella Kushelevsky•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2013

  • Intercultural Encounters in Collective Narratives

    Rella Kushelevsky•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2013•Cited by: 1

Collective narratives that have been received by a society as part of its culture are based on and respond to prevalent norms and values. Whether they conform to or criticize existing conventions, collective narratives are created within a cultural historical context that should be reconstructed as a point of departure for interpretation. In this article I focus on “The Shining Robe”, a story incorporated in Hibbur Yafeh MeHa’yeshua authored by R…

  • Medieval and Oral Variants of ‘The Tree Demon’ Tale Type (ATU 1168B)

    Rella Kushelevsky•ARTICLE•Folklore•2013•References: 1

In this article the study of literary and oral versions of ‘The Tree Demon’ (ATU 1168B) relates to the broader issue of the oral versus written transmission of folktales, which was raised in the late nineteenth century and is still relevant today. It examines three literary versions in compilations from the Middle Ages: a Hebrew version from the tenth century and two Muslim versions from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries in Persian and Arabi…

  • Hillel as the 'Image of a Man in the Skylight'
