  • Enduring Interest in Perceptual Ambiguity

    Gerald M Long, Thomas C Toppino•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2004•Cited by: 6•References: 133

Research favoring the so-called bottom-up and top-down classes of explanations for reversible figures that dominated the literature in last half of the 20th century is reviewed. Two conclusions are offered. First, any single-process model is extremely unlikely to be able to accommodate the wide array of empirical findings, suggesting that the "final" explanation will almost certainly involve a hybrid conceptualization of interacting sensory and c…

  • Foveal and parafoveal processing of asynchronous Stroop stimuli

    Open Access•Gerald M Long, Brian J Lyman•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1987

Two experiments are presented which used a form of the Stroop colour‐word task to study the processing of target and distractor information under changing conditions of temporal and spatial proximity. Experiment 1 focused on the marked empirical discrepancies in previous research reported in the recent literature. A coloured target and a distractor (neutral, facilitative or interfering) that were separated by variable onset asynchronies were pres…

  • Task and Size Effects in the Oppel-Kundt and Irradiation Illusions

Gerald M Long, Michael P Murtagh•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1984

The present study examined the effects of type of task and stimulus size on two well-known illusions of perceived size: the Oppel-Kundt illusion and the Irradiation illusion. In Experiment 1, a forced-choice task, in which 87 male and female college observers chose the "longer" of two side-by-side stimuli, was used to determine the relative perceived size of stimuli of different length that were all white, all black, or white with various numbers…
