A Study of Multivariate Permutation Tests Which May Replace Hotelling's T2 Test in Prescribed Circumstances
Multivariate permutation tests are described and studied which may be profitably substituted for Hotelling's one-sample P test in situations commonly arising in behavioral science research. These tests (a) may be computed even when the number of variables exceeds the number of subjects, (b) are distribution-free, (c) may be tailored for sensitivity to specific treatment alternatives, and (d) provide one-sided as well as two-sided tests of hypothe…
A more realistic look at the robustness and Type II error properties of the t test to departures from population normality
The Type I and II error properties of the t test were evaluated by means of a Monte Carlo study that sampled 8 real distribution shapes identified by Micceri (1986, 1989) as being representative of types encountered in psychology and education research
Comparison of the power of the paired samples t test to that of Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test under various population shapes
Comparison of the power of the paired samples t test to that of Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test under various population shapes
An Investigation of the Robustness of the t Test to Unit of Analysis Violations
In the first part of this study, sampling experiments were used to assess the Type I error rates of the t test in situations where classes or schools were randomly assigned to groups but analyses were carried out on individual student scores. It was found that Type I error rates were grossly inflated under all conditions investigated. In the second part of the study, mathematical analysis was used to demonstrate the fact that even small amounts o…
Tests of Hypotheses for Unbalanced Factorial Designs Under Various Regression/Coding Method Combinations
The controversy surrounding regression methods for unbalanced factorial designs is well known and well documented in articles by Overall and Spiegel (1969), Rawlings ( 1972), Gocka (1973), Overall and Spiegel (1973a), Overall and Spiegel (1973b), Appelbaum and Cramer (1974), Overall, Spiegel and Cohen (1975), and Rock, Werts and Linn (1976) to name just a few. Since it is possible to use any one of several popular systems for coding independent c…

"Comments on "Contrast Coding in Least Squares Regression Analysis
Kaufman and Sweet (1974) performed a service for educational researchers by bringing together in one article much of the more useful information pertaining to the regression of unbalanced factorial designs. However, several errors in the presentation are potentially misleading. The purpose of this paper is to delineate and correct these difficulties. The first error is conceptual in nature. Kaufman and Sweet seem to feel that the criterion varian…
