Visual working memory as the substrate for mental rotation
An experimental study by Hyun and Luck suggests that object working memory, but not spatial working memory, is employed during mental rotation. In contrast, correlational research points to the relevance of spatial working memory in mental rotation. Considering these somewhat conflicting results and the fact that a small sample was acquired in the study of Hyun and Luck, a replication of their study was conducted. Additionally, potential sex effe…
Sex differences in verbal working memory
The present meta-analysis aimed to quantify sex differences in verbal working memory and to examine potential moderators of these differences. We examined 802 effect sizes from 478 samples in 284 studies in a multilevel meta-analysis. Results revealed a small overall female advantage (g = .028, 95% CI [.006, .050]). In the overall sample, results showed that sex differences differed across tasks. Specifically, the female advantage was significant…
Implications for school achievement and causality
Context, Contrast, and Tone of Voice in Auditory Sarcasm Perception
Using Sarcasm to Compliment
Sex differences in the ability to recognise non-verbal displays of emotion
Gender differences in scholastic achievement
A female advantage in school marks is a common finding in education research, and it extends to most course subjects (e.g., language, math, science), unlike what is found on achievement tests. However, questions remain concerning the quantification of these gender differences and the identification of relevant moderator variables. The present meta-analysis answered these questions by examining studies that included an evaluation of gender differe…
Context and Intonation in the Perception of Sarcasm
This experiment investigated the relative contribution of context and tone of voice in the perception of sarcasm in short utterances. Eighty-two participants heard short stories read in a monotone voice reflecting either a positive or a negative context, followed by a relevant statement in a sarcastic or sincere tone of voice. Context and tone of voice were either congruent (e.g., positive context with sincere tone) or incongruent (e.g., positive…
Perceptual asymmetries and stimulus dominance in dichotic listening with natural fricatives
Subjective Auditory Features of Sarcasm
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the subjective auditory dimensions underlying the identification of short utterances as sarcastic. One-hundred fifty-one students were asked to identify the tone of voice in brief statements heard binaurally and intended to reflect neutral, sincere, and sarcastic tones. Participants also rated these statements on seven separate dimensions (clarity, tempo, resonance, pitch, pitch variation, inten…

The Relation Between Experience and Spatial Performance in Men and Women
Magnitude of sex differences in spatial abilities
Magnitude of sex differences in spatial abilities
In recent years, the magnitude, consistency, and stability across time of cognitive sex differences have been questioned. The present study examined these issues in the context of spatial abilities. A meta-analysis of 286 effect sizes from a variety of spatial ability measures was conducted. Effect sizes were partitioned by the specific test used and by a number of variables related to the experimental procedure in order to achieve homogeneity. R…
