All Resources Lead to Rome
This multi-study investigation examined what magnitude of personal resources people need to flourish in their personal life and at work. We specifically looked at the interplay between emotional intelligence (EI) and core self-evaluations (CSE) in relation to flourishing, happiness, and work engagement. Guided by job demands-resources theory, this investigation was conducted through two separate studies ( N s1 = 391; N s2 = 703) using path analys…
This is us now. Collectively making sense of our new identities as parents and early career academics
In this paper, we draw on our subjective experiences as Early Career Academics (ECAs) at a Dutch University to demonstrate our complex relationship between academic life and parenthood. Building on the sensemaking literature, we employ a collective autoethnography to unveil six distinct new parent scripts that ECA parents, like us, adopt when navigating boundaries between work and non-work tasks in academia. Our scripts are dynamic, and full of e…
Knowing is half the battle
College students, particularly those in healthcare fields, face an elevated risk of suicidal ideation and depression. Therefore, it is essential to explore how both actual and perceived emotional resources may play a role in suicide prevention within this age group. This study examined (1) whether actual self-focused emotion-regulation ability diminishes suicidal ideation through a decrease in depressive symptoms, and (2) whether perceived self-e…
The Role of Photographs and Time Lag on Positivity Ratings of Vacation and Weekend Memories
Two studies examined the question of whether photograph taking of an event influences the positivity of the evaluations of the event at a later point in time. Memories of photographed events yielded higher positivity ratings than memories that were not photographed. Although we expected fading of positivity ratings to occur more slowly over a period of two months for memories of photographed events, we found faster affect fading for those memorie…
Dynamic self- and other-focused emotional intelligence
This paper introduces a theoretical framework for research on the dynamics of self- and other-focused emotional intelligence (EI). The EI-framework focuses specifically on the interplay between different EI dimensions when individuals are processing their own emotions and the emotions of others. The framework captures different phases of processing self- and other-emotions. The first phase consists of situational cues (e.g., an argument) that eli…
Overlap between the general factor of personality and emotional intelligence
We examine the relationship between the general factor of personality (GFP) and emotional intelligence (EI) and specifically test the hypothesis that the GFP is a social effectiveness factor overlapping conceptually with EI. Presented is an extensive meta-analysis in which the associations between the GFP, extracted from the Big Five dimensions, with various EI measures is examined. Based on a total sample of k = 142 data sources (N = 36,268) the…
