  • La Relación entre Humanos y Animales en los Estudios Históricos del Caribe Insular

    Open Access•Reinaldo Funes Monzote•ARTICLE•Historia Ambiental Latinoamericana…•2024

The history of animals or the relationship with animals in the insular Caribbean region has few works explicitly part of this historiographic turn within Environmental History and other currents influenced by the ecological paradigm. This article explores the background of these studies and addresses some of the lines of historical research where animals appear more frequently in the Caribbean archipelago. First, reference will be made to their r…

  • The Short-Lived Zebu and Beef Boom in Cuba Before the 1959 Revolution

    Open Access•Reinaldo Funes Monzote•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2023•References: 1

In recent years, Animal History has gained influence within the environmental History of Latin America and the Caribbean. Animal environmental histories centred on livestock, however, remain limited. Therefore, more confluences between these perspectives could be fruitful in the future. Here we seek to integrate perspectives from socio-economic histories of livestock with those from animal studies by examining the history of the zebu boom for bee…

    Open Access•Reinaldo Funes-Monzote, Reinaldo Funes Monzote•ARTICLE•Mundo Agrario•2020

  • The Rise and Fall of Dairy Cows in Socialist Cuba

    Open Access•Reinaldo Funes Monzote•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2016•Cited by: 1

The Cuban revolution of 1959 represents in some sense a reaction against the traditional and omnipresent dominance of sugar cane agroindustry in the countryside and national economy. The first agrarian reform of 17 May provoked reaction from estates under foreign and local ownership and the confrontation with the US government, who supported their companies and maintained a secular control over Cuba’s economy. Consequently, the revolutionary gove…

  • From Rainforest to Cane Field in Cuba

Reinaldo Funes Monzote, Alex Martin•BOOK•From Rainforest to Cane Field in…•2008

This environmental history of Cuba since the age of Columbus emphasizes the two processes that have had the most dramatic impact on the island's landscape: deforestation; and sugar cultivation. During the first 300 years of Spanish settlement, sugar plantations arose primarily in areas where forests had been cleared by the royal navy, which maintained an interest in management and conservation for the shipbuilding industry. The sugar planters won…

  • Azúcar, deforestación y paisajes agroindustriales en Cuba, 1815-1926

    Open Access•Reinaldo Funes Monzote•ARTICLE•Varia Historia•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 1
