Revolución azucarera y cambio socioambiental en Cuba en tiempos de la Segunda Esclavitud

El cultivo en forma de plantaciones de la caña de azúcar, traída al Nuevo Mundo en el segundo viaje de Colón, sobresale entre los de mayor incidencia histórica en la transformación de los paisajes de América tropical y subtropical. Café, algodón, bananas (o plátanos), y más recientemente soja y palma africana, también han dejado una huella profunda en el subcontinente. Pero ninguno se compara a la caña en su duración temporal, de ya más de cuatro siglos, y presencia geográfica. Varios son los factores que influyeron en ese sentido. Por una parte, se podrían señalar las características biológicas de la planta y, por otra, su precoz carácter agroindustrial, debido a la necesidad de extraer el jugo en un breve lapso después de la cosecha, su temprana vinculación a mercados externos y la creciente escala de producción
