  • Impacts of fishery policy on the distribution of access and community benefits

    Open Access•Daniel R Mombourquette, Daniel Mombourquette et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2025

This paper provides an illustration of how fishery policies, particularly relating to transferability of licenses and quota holdings, can alter the distribution of fishery access, rights and benefits across fishing communities. Such distributional changes have consequences, but these are rarely made explicit within management, and there is too often a lack of effort to predict, monitor or mitigate those consequences. As seen in this paper, the la…

  • Best bang for your buck: Considerations for cost-efficiency in knowledge co-production

    Open Access•Denis B Karcher, Christopher Cvitanovic et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2025

Knowledge co-production is a key strategy of collaborative engagement between research and management to achieve better outcomes. Whereas the principles of knowledge co-production in support of evidence-informed policy-making are increasingly understood, our understanding of its cost-efficiency - putting benefits in relation to its cost - is in its infancy. Here, we approach this gap by exploring the key considerations for ensuring that the benef…

  • Expanding infrastructure ontologies: Integrative and critical insights for coastal studies and governance

    Open Access•Paul Foley, Lorenzo Moro et al.•ARTICLE•Coastal Studies & Society•2024•Cited by: 2

Diverse knowledge insights are essential to inform action on bringing about transformations in how societies live with changing Earth, ocean and coastal systems. However, knowledge forms typically used in governance systems are stubbornly limited. This paper analyses the extent to which an expanding ontology of the concept of ‘infrastructure’ can contribute to building more integrated knowledge for governance in ocean and coastal contexts. This p…

  • Full spectrum sustainability and a theory of access: Integrating social benefits into fisheries governance

    Open Access•Courtenay E Parlee, Paul Foley et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2021

The United Nations has identified access to and benefits from fisheries resources as key sustainable development challenges. The business-as-usual management approach focusing on a limited set of biological and economic considerations has not adequately addressed widespread global calls for governing the distribution of access and benefits effectively and equitably. Our paper develops a novel approach for incorporating social science analysis of …

  • Practical use of full-spectrum sustainability in the Bay of Fundy

    Open Access•Owen P Jones, Robert L Stephenson•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2019

It is increasingly recognized that sustainability is composed of four key components: environmental, economic, social (including cultural), and institutional (or governance). Fisheries and coastal management systems, however, are heavily weighted toward biophysical and ecological aspects, thus leaving the "human dimension," i.e., social, economic, and institutional, relatively neglected. Full-spectrum sustainability (FSS) is an approach to resour…

  • Key principles of marine ecosystem-based management

    Open Access•Rachel D Long, Anthony Charles et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2015

Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) has gained international popularity in recent years, but the lack of consensus on its definition has precluded the use of a universal implementation framework. The large number and variety of principles that make up EBM, and the diversity in perspectives among key management players, has impeded the practical application of EBM. Agreement on a list of the essential ingredients of EBM is vital to successful applica…

The Blue Blanket Island site (39WW9), a small, fortified, proto-historic Indian village on an island in the Missouri River, in Walworth County, South Dakota, was partially excavated by a River Basin Surveys crew in August 1961. One centrally located earthlodge, sections of the fortification, storage pits, and middens were excavated. Artifacts were scanty but architectural details were informative. died of a heart attack at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on February 23, 1966, at the age of sixty-eight years, six months, and twelve days. His ashes were interred at Arlington National Cemetery in a simple, military, graveside service that seemed most appropriate for a man of his modest and unassuming nature who nevertheless has left such a masterful imprint on his lifelong profession. James Bryant Conant once said, "Each honest …

This particular project is located on the East Fork of the Trinity River in Collin County, Texas, 21 miles northeast of Dallas. It was scheduled for completion in January, 1952.The Trinity River is one of several maj…

Within the River Basin Surveys, Smithsonian Institution, administration and scientific research are closely integrated but separate efforts. This basic principle of simultaneous integration and separation can and should be applied to all anthropological research. Problems that must be met in administration are those of finance and the fisca…

Necessarily it is brief and only a bare minimum of description of each cultural group has been included. Also, the sequential alignments are for the most part te…

This reservoir is being built on the East Fork of the Trinity River near Wylie, Texas and approximately 25 miles northe…

  • A Corner-Tang Artifact from Oregon

    Open Access•Robert L Stephenson•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1944

During the cataloging of a collection of some 650 tiny projectile points from the banks of the Columbia River in Columbia County, Oregon, an unusual specimen was brought to light. All but five of the points in the collection are under 3/4 inch in length and are proportionately narrow and thin. The five larger specimens were, then, immediately outstanding. Of these, one is of the corner-tang variety. It is 2.13 inches long, 1 inch wide, and 0.36 i…
