  • Queer Compulsions

Amy Sueyoshi, Amy Haruko Sueyoshi•BOOK•Queer compulsions•2012

In September 1897 Yone Noguchi (1875–1947) contemplated crafting a poem to his new love, western writer Charles Warren Stoddard. He viewed their relationship as doomed by their introverted dispositions and differences in background. While confessing his love to Stoddard, Noguchi had a child with his editor, Léonie Gilmour; became engaged to Ethel Armes; and upon his return to Japan married Matsu Takeda—all within a span of seven years. This book …

Amy Sueyoshi’s Queer Compulsions: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the Affairs of Yone Noguchi is a fascinating study of the writings and character of the transnational Japanese-born poet Yone Noguchi during his years in the United States, as seen through the prism of his interlocking sexual/romantic affairs with western writer Charles Warren Stoddard, historian Ethel Armes, and editor Léonie Gilmour (a liaison that produced the famed sculptor Isam…

  • Miss Morning Glory

    Amy Sueyoshi•ARTICLE•Amerasia Journal•2011•References: 2

In 1898 a young Japanese man in his early twenties sat depressed about his new life in America. Low-wage jobs could neither pay for housing nor adequate food for Yone Noguchi. He had grown exhausted from doing domestic work for Americans whom he thought smelled like rotting cheese. He considered giving up on life itself when letters from acclaimed Western writer Charles Warren Stoddard arrived just in time. Upon seeing Stoddard's handwriting, Nog…

  • Friday the Thirteenth—Love, Commitment, and then Catastrophe

    Amy Sueyoshi•ARTICLE•Amerasia Journal•2006•References: 1

On Friday the thirteenth, a day of ominous bad luck for the more superstitious, I got married. Personally, I had hoped that it would push my family to more fully accept my partner. Publicly, I had wishfully imagined that it would serve as a credential that would declare my same-sex love as a legitimate union. As luck would have it, neither would occur in the wake of what was supposed to be more of the most memorable events in my life
