  • Gender, Race, and the National Education Association

Maxine Schwartz Seller, Wayne J Urban•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002•Cited by: 7

Clearly written, well researched, and thoughtful, this book describes and analyzes the changing organizational structure and policies of the National Education Association (nea) through two world wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and the turn toward conservatism in the 1980s and early 1990s. The NEA operated at three levels—national, state, and local. While the latter two are not ignored, the book focuses on the…

  • Filling the Space

    Maxine Schwartz Seller•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•1996

The British government interned 24,000 men and4000 women of “enemy” nationality living in Britain in the spring of 1940. Some were Nazis but most anti‐Nazi Jewish refugees. Using oral histories, supplemented by documentary sources, this paper explores the experiences of these refugees, especially their educational experiences. It describes how, with little outside assistance, the refugees developed a rich cultural and educational life in the empt…

  • Boundaries, Bridges, and the History of Education

Maxine Schwartz Seller•ARTICLE•History of Education Quarterly•1991•Cited by: 4

I first began to think about boundaries, although not about bridges, and the history of education when my first Ph.D. advisee walked into my office sixteen years ago to tell me about her dissertation topic. I'm going to look at the history of the world to see who got educated, who didn't get educated, and why, she announced. I was horrified. Needless to say, I soon persuaded her to abandon her boundless, boundaryless, topic for a neat do-able one…

  • A History of Women's Education in the United States

Maxine Schwartz Seller, Thomas Woody•ARTICLE•History of Education Quarterly•1989•References: 2

Although sixty years have passed since its original publication in 1929, Thomas Woody's monumental two-volume treatise A History of Women's Education in the United States remains the authoritative, indeed the only, comprehensive survey of the history of women's education in the United States. Women's lives have changed greatly since the appearance of this now-classic study. Moreover, recent decades have seen an explosion of scholarship in women's…
