  • A Signifying System Almost Devoid of Semantics

    Open Access•Ugo Volli•ARTICLE•Signata•2024

After having discussed the most significant semantic hypotheses for the food system and having rejected them, the paper proposes to consider it as a monoplanar or “appearance” signifying system. Semiotics can operate on these systems by analyzing their morphology and syntax. A general scheme for the food system is proposed, stratified into four levels (ingredients, food, meals, cycles)

  • The transcendence of the face

    Open Access•Ugo Volli•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper starts with an examination of the terms used to designate the face in different languages, in particular in Italian, comparing these with the definitions provided by some authoritative dictionaries as well as with their etymology. This exploration yields some remarkable results: firstly, it appears that the face is indeed a term that has a material meaning, but at the same time it is a social object; secondly, the importance of the com…

  • La rosa di Sharon

    Open Access•Ugo Volli•ARTICLE•Ocula•2020

  • Taste and meaning

    Open Access•Ugo Volli•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2016•Cited by: 2

A basic anthropological fact is that, although hunger is a constant experience in human history, not everything that from a biochemical point of view could be nutritious, in fact is eaten. In every human culture, food, not unlike language, is controlled by rich sets of rules that establish obligations and prohibitions, contextual bonds to time, and circumstances and syntactic structures for different types of meal. Often these rules - as well as …

  • Cherubim

    Open Access•Ugo Volli•ARTICLE•Signs and Society•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

There is a very general problem of representing transcendence in different culture: how to make present what is by definition beyond human experience. Many cultures forbid it, other as the Christian one allow representations of some divine presence in the world. Jewish tradition is in general strongly anti-iconic and especially forbids any representation of divinity. But in the most sacred place of Judaism, the Holy of Holies, the book of Exodus …

    Open Access•Ugo Volli•ARTICLE•Comunicação e Sociedade•2005
