  • The Influence of Perceptual Features, Ethnic Labels, and Sociocultural Information on the Development of Ethnic/Racial Bias in Young Children

    Open Access•Kurt Kowalski, Ya-Fen Lo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 20

Taiwanese children from 3 to 11 years of age were asked to identify their racial group membership and select potential playmates from arrays of racially diverse photos. Children at all age levels displayed some Asian bias; however, this bias was lowest in 10- to 11- year-olds. Same-race bias was also reduced in 8 to 9 year olds by labeling the Asian photos as an ethnicity other than Chinese. This labeling effect emerged and was strongest at the s…

  • How much does a shared name make things similar? Part 1. Linguistic labels and the development of similarity judgment

    Vladimir M Sloutsky, Ya-Fen Lo et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Most theoretical proposals considering effects of language on similarity assume that labels affect similarity in a qualitative all-or-nothing manner. This article proposes another theoretical alternative--a model of the label as a discrete attribute of an object. According to this model, the relative weight of labels decreases with the child's age. Predictions derived from the model were tested in 3 experiments. In these experiments, children age…
