Evaluating Environmental Education Programs Using a Qualitative GIS Approach
Environmental education (EE) programs commonly emphasize experiencing the place(s) where a program is located. Yet, program evaluations seldom map locations where participants demonstrate outcomes, whether during or after program experiences. To explore the value of including location in program assessment, we pilot a qualitative, map-based analysis to complement current evaluation efforts of an organization providing EE programs aimed at improvi…
Exploring Relationality Among Children's Place Attachments in Their Experiences of a New Place
In an increasingly mobile and global context, children construct meanings through experiencing an array of places in their lives, potentially forming a basis for place attachments. In this study, we explore how a group of 27 children (ages 10 to 14) in Denver, Colorado, value ordinary places where they have some level of attachment; we then identify which values they draw upon in initial experiences of a new, out-of-the-ordinary place. Using phot…
The Impact of Covid-19 Lockdowns on Youth Relationships with Nature
Youth relationships with nature are profoundly influenced by their day-to-day interactions with people and places. Here, we explored whether abrupt spatial restrictions imposed by COVID-19 lockdowns impacted how/where youth relate with nature. We compared "story maps" created by two groups of youth—before and during lockdown—which combined geographically referenced locations, images, and descriptions about relationships with nature, supplemented …
Engaging children to voice their sense of place through location-based story making with photo-story maps
Sense of place is neither linear nor rooted in time. One way for children to voice their sense of place is through location-based stories with plots structured in space, rather than time. Since mobile devices are already ingrained in the everyday lives of many children in the U.S., a mobile application offers a familiar medium to engage children in location-based story making. Here, we present photo-story maps, our approach to leveraging an exist…
