  • From the Medieval ḫarğāt to Contemporary Songs: Patterns of Codeswitching Involving Arabic1

    Eirlys E Davies, Abdelâli Bentahila•ARTICLE•Arabica•2014

This paper seeks to use evidence from contemporary language use to shed light on that of an earlier period. It examines a set of ḫarğāt , the closing sections of medieval Andalusian muwaššaḥ poems, which exhibit codeswitching between colloquial Andalusian Arabic and Romance, and compares the patterns of switching seen there with those used in some contemporary popular songs, in particular the Arabic-French switching used in the rai lyrics of Nort…

  • Code switching and the globalisation of popular music: The case of North African rai and rap

    Eirlys E Davies, Abdelâli Bentahila•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2006•Cited by: 11•References: 5

Present trends towards the globalisation and hybridisation of popular music genres are illustrated through an examination of two types of music currently popular in North Africa: rai, a genre originating in Algeria and now becoming better known in the West, and rap, a product of the West which has now been appropriated by Algerian and Moroccan performers. Parallels are drawn between the paths followed by these two genres. The study focuses on the…

  • Duelling Languages: Grammatical Structure in Codeswitching

    Abdelâli Bentahila•REVIEW•Language•1995•Cited by: 11

The goal of this book is to describe and explain intrasentential codeswitching - the production of two or more languages within the same sentence. Most linquists who do not study codeswitching think of it as belonging strictly in the domain of sociolinguistics. Most codeswitching studies do indeed have a social aspect, because they typically use naturally occurring performance data as their base. However, this book is just as much a study in gram…

  • Language revival: Restoration or transformation

    Abdelâli Bentahila, Eirlys E Davies•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 19

The literature on language revival reveals conflicting opinions as to what constitutes a successful revival and what factors are relevant to its success. This paper suggests that many of the controversies over what methods revivalists should adopt and what results they should be seeking could be reduced if a clear distinction were recognised between two possible goals of language revival: the process of restoration, which aims at returning the la…
