  • Wie unterschiedlich in Deutschland Solargeschichte erzählt wird

    Joachim Radkau•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2023

  • Gau

    Open Access•Joachim Radkau•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2013

This essay traces the history of the nuclear risk discourse and policy in West Germany from the first use of the term GAU in the 1960s to the present. A close examination of the term reveals that it is in fact ambiguous, oscillating between support of nuclear energy and criticism of it. GAU, which stands for “größter anzunehmender Unfall”, is a translation of the English “maximum credible accident”, the greatest possible accident that was conceiv…

  • Nature and Power

    Open Access•Joachim Radkau•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2013•References: 15

Nature and Power is to be understood not only as human power against nature but also as power by nature in the sense of Michel Foucault's biopouvoir (biopower) or Francis Bacon's “Naturae non imperator nisi parendo” (Only by obeying nature may we dominate nature). The fragile human attempts to get power over nature and by nature have a long history, reaching back over millennia until prehistoric times, and much of world history may be explained i…

  • Joachim Radkau replies to his critics

    Joachim Radkau•ARTICLE•Max Weber Studies•2010

The negative status of biography in writing history and in the social sciences is discussed. It is argued that the individual human life needs to be placed within the general situation of the world and that structural history and social systems are denatured by excluding the human person. The author discusses and replies to critical reactions to his biography of Max Weber. A caesura in Weber's writings occurred in autumn 1909 when Else Jaffé rele…

  • Max Weber

    Joachim Radkau•BOOK•Max Weber•2009

Radkau brings out, in a way that no one has ever done before, the intimate interrelations between Weber's thought and his life experience. He presents detailed revelations about the great enigmas of Weber's life: his suffering and erotic experiences, his fears and his desires, his creative power and his methods of work as well as his religious experience and his relation to nature and to death. --from publisher description

    Joachim Radkau•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2008

  • Bicultural Resynthesis

Open Access•Joachim Radkau, Napholz et al.•ARTICLE•American Indian and Alaska Native…•2000

The purpose of this qualitative study of a 6-week effectiveness trial was to describe among a group of urban American Indian women, the process of successful traditionalism in the form of bicultural resynthesis. Bicultural resynthesis represents a major current attempt on the part of the participants to integrate traditional and contemporary demands in a positive, culturally-consistent manner. The themes of shame and isolation, adapting to surviv…

  • Wood and Forestry in German History

    Joachim Radkau•ARTICLE•Environment and History•1996•Cited by: 5

Environmental history is mostly human history, but, at the same time, should be more than it; that ambiguity causes much theoretical confusion. The author discusses some conceptual problems of environmental history and their effect upon historiographical practice. In connection with that, he comments on several open questions of German forest history: the environmental significance of the many cries of alarm about 'wood famine'; the idea of natur…
