The negative status of biography in writing history and in the social sciences is discussed. It is argued that the individual human life needs to be placed within the general situation of the world and that structural history and social systems are denatured by excluding the human person. The author discusses and replies to critical reactions to his biography of Max Weber. A caesura in Weber's writings occurred in autumn 1909 when Else Jaffé released Weber from both erotic and intellectial blockages, resulting in the insights of 'Intermediate Reflections'
