Effective When Distinctive
Parallel tracking of distant relations between speech elements, so‐called nonadjacent dependencies (NADs), is crucial in language development but computationally demanding and acquired only in late preschool years. As processing of single NADs is facilitated when dependent elements are perceptually similar, we investigated how phonetic similarity affects parallel dependency processing in preschoolers (2–4 years old, N = 54). In a passive‐listenin…
Inner speech as a cognitive tool—or what is the point of talking to oneself
Many higher cognitive tasks, such as problem-solving and deliberation are accompanied by the experience of an inner voice in our heads. In this paper, we develop the idea that our own inner speech supports these tasks. We approach the phenomenon of inner speech through a comparison with overt speech – a comparison that is suggested by a Vygotskian approach that focuses on how inner speech develops from overt speech during ontogeny. We argue for t…
On the Acquisition of Polarity Items
Existing work on the acquisition of polarity-sensitive expressions (PSIs) suggests that children show an early sensitivity to the restricted distribution of negative polarity items (NPIs), but may be delayed in the acquisition of positive polarity items (PPIs). However, past studies primarily targeted PSIs that are highly frequent in children's language input. In this paper, we report an experimental investigation on children's comprehension of t…
Biological Preconditions for Language Development
The influence of lexical familiarity on ERP responses during sentence comprehension in language learners
Previous research on event-related potentials (ERPs) on second language processing has revealed a great degree of plasticity in brain mechanisms of adult language learners. Studies with natural and artificial languages show that the N400 as well as the P600 component appear in learners after sufficient training. The present experiment tests if and which ERP components in response to syntactic and thematic processes generalize to unfamiliar lexica…
L2 in a Nutshell
The present chapter bridges two lines of neurocognitive research, which are, despite being related, usually discussed separately from each other. The two fields, second language (L2) sentence comprehension and artificial grammar processing, both depend on the successful learning of complex sequential structures. The comparison of the two research directions will be taken as the starting point for the attempt to study L2 sentence comprehension usi…
Electrophysiological correlates of second language processing
The aim of this article is to provide a selective review of event-related potential (ERP) research on second language processing. As ERPs have been used in the investigation of a variety of linguistic domains, the reported studies cover different paradigms assessing processing mechanisms in the second language at various levels, ranging from phoneme discrimination to complex sentence processing. Differences between ERP patterns of first language …
