  • From early communication to bimodal vocabulary acquisition

Open Access•Evelyne Mercure, Victoria L Mousley et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2026

Early language development has rarely been studied in hearing children with deaf parents who are exposed to both a spoken and a signed language (bimodal bilinguals). This study presents longitudinal data of early communication and vocabulary development in a group of 31 hearing infants exposed to British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English, at 6 months, 15 months, 24 months and 7 years, in comparison with monolinguals (exposed to English) and …

  • Bilingual toddlers show increased attention capture by static faces compared to monolinguals

Open Access•Victoria L Mousley, Mairéad Macsweeney et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2023

Bilingual infants rely differently than monolinguals on facial information, such as lip patterns, to differentiate their native languages. This may explain, at least in part, why young monolinguals and bilinguals show differences in social attention. For example, in the first year, bilinguals attend faster and more often to static faces over non-faces than do monolinguals (Mercure et al., 2018). However, the developmental trajectories of these di…

  • Eye Movements During Visual Speech Perception in Deaf and Hearing Children

    Open Access•Elizabeth Worster, Hannah Pimperton et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 31

For children who are born deaf, lipreading (speechreading) is an important source of access to spoken language. We used eye tracking to investigate the strategies used by deaf (n = 33) and hearing 5-8-year-olds (n = 59) during a sentence speechreading task. The proportion of time spent looking at the mouth during speech correlated positively with speechreading accuracy. In addition, all children showed a tendency to watch the mouth during speech …

  • Sign Language and the Brain

Ruth Campbell, Mairéad Macsweeney et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2007

How are signed languages processed by the brain? This review briefly outlines some basic principles of brain structure and function and the methodological principles and techniques that have been used to investigate this question. We then summarize a number of different studies exploring brain activity associated with sign language processing especially as compared to speech processing. We focus on lateralization: is signed language lateralized t…

  • Varieties of Short-Term Memory Coding in Deaf Teenagers

Mairéad Macsweeney, Ruth Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•1996

Two experiments explored qualitative aspects of immediate memory for pictures in deaf teenagers by attempting to equate for memory span and then imposing systematic manipulations on encoding and rehearsal. In experiment 1, deaf teenagers and hearing children of different ages were tested using a variety of code-suppression activities during presentation. All subjects were affected by articulatory suppression (AS). In addition, a simple motor task…
