Challenging assumptions about migrant language use: Evidence from a Swedish study with the Experience Sampling Method and the Lang-Track-App
In an era of global migration, where public discourse often assumes that migrants lack exposure to and command of local majority language(s), it is a crucial research task to understand how migrants learn and use new languages in their everyday lives. This study provides empirical evidence about the quantity and nature of everyday language exposure and use (LEU) among migrants in Sweden. Using the Experience Sampling Method and the Lang-Track-App…
Recognized but harder to integrate: An eye-tracking study of French gender-fair forms during reading
Over the last few decades, linguistic gender-fair forms have become increasingly used by individuals and official institutions. In the French-speaking sphere, this has led to heated discussions among politicians and other stakeholders, some of whom claim that these forms render texts illegible and inaccessible to the general public. However, the processing of gender-fair forms in reading has been the topic of a few empirical studies. In the prese…
Language exposure and use in study abroad versus migration contexts: Modelling activity and learner profiles with ESM data
Language exposure and use (LEU) are widely viewed as key factors in multilingual development, and research highlights the importance of considering not just the frequency and quantity of LEU, but also contextual factors such as when and where a language is used, with whom and why. In this study, we illustrate the complexity of LEU in two contexts (study abroad and migration) by applying sequential mixture modelling to rich Experience Sampling Met…
Is This (Becoming) a Theory of Second Language Acquisition: A Commentary on “Complexity and Difficulty in Second Language Acquisition: A Theoretical and Methodological Overview”
Language acquisition is a process whereby an individual develops a language in interaction with the environment (Tomasello, 2005). Language acquisition research studies this process with the aim of describing, explaining, and predicting it. In view of the above, a question for this commentary is how the overview of and guidelines for complexity and difficulty presented by Bulté, Housen, and Pallotti (henceforth BHP) contribute to research in lang…
Foreign language perceptual curiosity: Construct, measurement, and applications
Learning a language is a creative process. It involves novelty and imagination. While curiosity can be highly beneficial, research is limited. Studies so far conducted have explored epistemic curiosity as a trait-like disposition. In contrast, the current study focuses on perceptual curiosity (PC). PC is a situational response evoked by novelty, complexity and ambiguities in sensory stimulation. PC generates attention and prompts visual inspectio…
The Lang-Track-App: Open-Source Tools for Implementing the Experience Sampling Method in Second Language Acquisition Research
This paper introduces the Lang-Track-App, a smartphone application and backend system to aid second language acquisition researchers in implementing the experience sampling method (ESM). Surveying research participants with the Lang-Track-App multiple times per day can yield exceptionally rich data that can be analyzed in multiple ways. This article explains the different Lang-Track-App components and describes workflows for both researchers and …
Input in study abroad and views from acquisition: Focus on constructs, operationalization and measurement issues: Introduction to the special issue
This article briefly discusses the notion of input in a study abroad perspective, situating it against how input is treated in second language acquisition (SLA) more broadly, with a focus on methodological issues, operationalizations, and measurements. It further introduces three studies that examine input as studied in ‘the real wild’, and two studies that instead focus on ‘the digital wild’
Strengthening L3 French Motivation: The Differential Impact of Vision-Enhancing Activities
Even though the European Union has long promoted multilingualism, it has proven difficult to achieve widespread multilingual language competence beyond English through formal education in Europe. In Sweden, high dropout rates have been recorded in second foreign language (SFL) classes, and French is currently the most vulnerable language among the major SFLs with respect to the number of pupils and availability across the country. Therefore, an i…
Trends in the study of Modern languages in Swedish lower secondary school (2000 – 2018) and the impact of grade point average enhancement credits
This paper investigates trends in the study of Modern languages or second foreign languages (SFLs) in Swedish lower secondary school between 2000 and 2018. Over the last decades, SFLs, i.e. French, German and Spanish, have been the target of several policy measures as a response to a declining interest. However, few reports on their impact have been published. We report the proportion of pupils studying an SFL at the national level and across dem…
On cross‐linguistic variation and measures of linguistic complexity in learner texts: Italian, French and English
The paper investigates possible effects of cross‐linguistic variation on measures of syntactic complexity in 60 texts from Swedish L1 learners of English, French and Italian as foreign languages at CEFR level A and CEFR level B. A previous study on the same learners and texts, showed significant differences between proficiency levels for two length measures of complexity in English and French, but not in Italian. In this paper we hypothesize that…
Offering research education for in-service language teachers
Since 2008, the Swedish government has launched occasional offers of funding for graduate schools aimed at practising teachers. The fundamental purpose of this initiative is to enhance quality in the Swedish school system by implementing what is stated in the Education Act, namely that education at all levels should be based upon scientific knowledge and evidence-based experience
Combined effects of age of onset and input on the development of different grammatical structures: A study of simultaneous and successive bilingual acquisition of French
This study investigates the combined effects of Age of Onset of Acquisition (AOA) and quality and quantity of input on the development of three grammatical structures in French. In a longitudinal and multiple case study including successive (L2) Swedish-French bilingual children (n = 3), simultaneous (2L1) Swedish-French bilingual children (n = 3) and monolingual French children (n = 3), we examine the development of finite verb forms, object pro…
SLA developmental stages and teachers’ assessment of written French: Exploring Direkt Profil as a diagnostic assessment tool
One core area of research in Second Language Acquisition is the identification and definition of developmental stages in different L2s. For L2 French, Bartning and Schlyter (2004) presented a model of six morphosyntactic stages of development in the shape of grammatical profiles. The model formed the basis for the computer program Direkt Profil (Granfeldt et al., 2006), which carries out an automated analysis of the developmental stage of a learn…
