Exploring the figured worlds of mindfulness and teaching
In the high-pressure world of education, mindfulness practices have been offered to help teachers and students to handle stress and manage their emotions. We explore how they negotiated mindfulness in their practice, illustrating the power of an anthropological look at a typically psychological construct
The View from the Lighted Schoolhouse
In this essay we examine how educators work within a component of a class size reduction reform designed to strengthen the connections between families’ home and school lives. We describe the accomplishments and struggles experienced by educators enacting this “lighted schoolhouse” based on our research in nine schools over three years. In this article, we explore home-school relations as the establishment of a complex relationship between institutions and individuals in specific contexts. Using Bakhtin’s ideas of answerability, which depict a particular kind of responsibility, and addressivity, a conception of the relational nature of being, we explore how parents in one elementary school came to understand and enact relationships with schoolpeople. Answerability and addressivi…

Parents and Mathematics Education Reform
In this article, we explore the meaning that parents bring to and make out of their interactions with the school through assessment. Based on a qualitative study of mathematics reform, we examine interviews with 18 parents of middle school students. Through a Bakhtinian analysis, we find that parents' perspectives on assessment are framed by their past experiences with schools. Their reaction is situated historically, politically, and socially; t…

Three perspec tives represented the degree to which student teachers emphasized their role or that of their students in the success or failure of the lesson. Illustration…
Academic and Occupational Performance
Computer searches of three data bases and hand searches of four major review articles yielded 35 studies of the association between academic and occupational performance in various fields completed since 1950. The study-weighted mean of the 209 correlations is .155, and the standard deviation is .176. Although highly significant, academic indicators such as grades and test scores account on average for only 2.4% of the variance in occupational pe…
