  • Alcohol use/abuse and help-seeking among U.S. adults: The role of racial-ethnic origin and foreign-born status

Magdalena Szaflarski, Daniel H Klepinger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2017

We used data from Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions to examine racial-ethnic and nativity-based variations in alcohol use/abuse and treatment seeking while accounting for acculturation, stress, and social integration factors. The dependent variables included alcohol use, risky drinking, DSM-IV alcohol use disorder, and treatment seeking in the past 12 months. Racial-ethnic categories includ…

  • The Role of Relationship Power in Couple Decisions About Contraception in the Us

    Open Access•William R Grady, Daniel H Klepinger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2010

Most analyses of the contraceptive decision-making in which couples engage are based on the reports of only one partner, usually the female partner. This study uses information from the 2006 National Couples Survey conducted in the US, which was obtained from both partners in intimate heterosexual relationships to investigate the relative impact of the male and female partner's method preferences on the type of method they use together. It also i…

  • Identifying Social Drinkers Likely to Consume Alcohol during Pregnancy: Findings from a Prospective Cohort Study

Open Access•Janet Kay Bobo, Daniel H Klepinger et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2007

To prevent fetal alcohol syndrome, some social drinkers who may become pregnant need more than a brief caution, but they can be difficult to detect in clinical settings. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth data from 754 women who completed up to four alcohol history interviews during their college-age years (18-21), and semiparametric group-based models were used to identify groups more likely to drink during a future pregnancy. Two drinking tr…

  • Childhood Family, Ethnicity, and Drug Use Over the Life Course

    Open Access•Lisa A Cubbins, Daniel H Klepinger•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 39

Using multiply imputed data from 5 waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (N = 8,294), we investigated whether childhood family characteristics and childhood religious affiliation explain ethnic differences in marijuana and cocaine use in the last year. None of the childhood factors explained ethnic differences in drug use, though ethnicity and several childhood factors had age-specific effects. Over the life course from young adultho…

  • Effects of Unemployment Insurance Work-Search Requirements: The Maryland Experiment

    Daniel H Klepinger, Terry R Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This paper describes findings from a 1994 experimental evaluation of alternative work-search requirements in the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program. Requiring additional employer contacts or verification of contacts reduced UI receipt by one week and $115 per claimant. Because these additional requirements did not entail additional re-employment services, the UI spell reduction can be attributed to increased non-monetary costs for remaining on U…

  • Childhood Living Arrangements and Adult Children’s Relations with their Parents

    Open Access•Diane N Lye, Daniel H Klepinger et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1995•Cited by: 19•References: 35

We examine the relationship of childhood living arrangements to adult child-parent relations. Compared with adult children raised in intact families, adult children whose parents divorced have less frequent contact with their parents and report a lower-quality relationship with their parents. We observe these negative effects for both custodial and noncustodial parents, although the effects are larger for noncustodial parents. Remarriage of the c…

  • The Sexual Behavior of Men in the United States

John O G Billy, Koray Tanfer et al.•ARTICLE•Family Planning Perspectives•1993

A nationally representative study of the sexual behavior of men aged 20-39 in the United States shows that the prevalence and frequency of sexual acts (vaginal, anal and oral) and sexual orientation vary by social and demographic characteristics. Analysis of data from 3,321 respondents to the 1991 National Survey of Men reveals that 95% of men have had vaginal intercourse; among them, 23% have had 20 or more vaginal sex partners in their lifetime…
