  • Zur Einführung

Open Access•Gudrun Held, Michael Messner et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2026

This special issue investigates the linguistic and multimodal representation of spatiality and temporality as core cognitive dimensions in contemporary discourse. Emphasizing their interdependence, the contributions examine how space and time are conceptually integrated, semantically mediated, and pragmatically realized across a range of communicative and medial contexts. Drawing on approaches from cognitive linguistics, interactional linguistics…

  • Raum und Zeit zwischen Sichtbarem und Vorstellbarem – Multimodales space - und time-making in der Tourismuskommunikation

    Open Access•Michael Messner, Monika Messner•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2026

This article examines the multimodal representation and coding of spatiality and temporality in tourism discourse. Tourism communication is understood as spatial communication in which a geographical or topographical space is transported into a touristic sight; and as temporal communication in which touristic time is represented as extraordinary and as counterpart to ordinary everyday time. Space and time are very closely linked with each other a…

  • Vocalizations in orchestra rehearsals

    Open Access•Michael Messner•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Vocalizations are a central resource for instructing in orchestra rehearsals. Conductors use them to make the musicians understand what they want to hear, i.e., through singing and rhythmic vocalizations they imitate or depict the envisaged musical qualities. In this contribution, I examine what vocalizations of orchestra conductors look like and how they are embedded in the instructional interaction between conductor and musicians. Based on a co…

  • Domani a quest’ora potresti essere qui’

    Open Access•Michael Messner•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2023•References: 2

Materiality, mediality, locality and temporality are constitutive characteristics of texts. Various texts in mediatized everyday reality show temporal aspects that influence their perception and their functions in different ways. The present article considers diverse expressions of temporality in destination ads, a genre that is hitherto underexplored. A special focus is put on multimodal practices that express temporal aspects, for instance the …

  • “Abbiamo detto con te no che tu hai ta da di da dim (Moves Right Hand on the Beat)”—The Interplay of Semiotic Modes in Chamber Music Lessons Under a Multimodal and Interactional Perspective

    Open Access•Michael Messner, Monika Messner•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2022

This study analyzes the interplay of semiotic modes employed by a teacher and music students in a chamber music lesson for instructing, learning, and discussing. In particular, it describes how specific higher-level actions are accomplished through the mutual contextualization of talk and further audible and visible semiotic resources, such as gesture, gaze, material objects, vocalizing, and music. The focus lies on modal complexity, i.e., how di…

  • Sind Sie noch bei der Arbeit oder schon am Arbeiten? Regionale Spielarten von Progressivität im Deutschen

Open Access•Birgit Füreder, Dirk Köning et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2022

Progressivity in German can be expressed not only by lexical means but also by various periphrastic structures, e. g. the am-periphrasis, the prepositions bei and in combined with nominalized infinitives or the periphrastic infinitival construction with the auxiliary verb tun. However, the use of these structures can vary considerably from region to region, especially in oral communication, often also in connection with significant diastratic, di…

  • Multimodales Erzählen in der Orchesterprobe

    Open Access•Michael Messner, Monika Messner•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2020

The focus of attention in this contribution are narrative sequences in orchestra rehearsals realized by the conductor using different semiotic resources such as talk, gesture, facial expressions, gaze and body movement. Adopting a conversation analytic approach to a video-recorded orchestra rehearsal, the article aims to illustrate how narrative elements are implemented in the primarily instructive context of the rehearsal and which functions suc…

  • Gender Ideologies, Youth Sports, and the Production of Soft Essentialism

    Michael A Messner, Michael Messner•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2011•Cited by: 62•References: 8

By the mid-Twentieth Century in the U.S., a dominant ideology of natural, categorical differences between women and men was an organic part of the unequal distribution of women and men into domestic and public realms, especially in middle class families. Sport was a key site for the naturalization of this ideology, which I call “hard essentialism.” Since the 1970s, an explosion of female athletic participation mirrored the movement of women into …

  • It’s Not About the Game

Cheryl Cooky, Faye Linda Wachs et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2010•Cited by: 36•References: 18

Using intersectionality and hegemony theory, we critically analyze mainstream print news media’s response to Don Imus’ exchange on the 2007 NCAA women’s basketball championship game. Content and textual analysis reveals the following media frames: “invisibility and silence”; “controlling images versus women’s self-definitions”; and, “outside the frame: social issues in sport and society.” The paper situates these media frames within a broader soc…

  • It's All for the Kids

Michael A Messner, Michael Messner•BOOK•It's All for the Kids•2009

Today, in a world quite different from the one that existed just thirty years ago, both girls and boys play soccer, baseball, softball, and other youth sports. Yet has the dramatic surge in participation by girls contributed to greater gender equality? In this engaging study, leading sociologist Michael A. Messner probes the richly complex gender dynamics of youth sports. Weaving together vivid first-person interviews with his own experiences as …

  • Boyhood, Organized Sports, and the Construction of Masculinities

    Open Access•Michael A Messner, Michael Messner•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•1990•Cited by: 47•References: 17

This article is based on in-depth interviews with 30 male former athletes of different race and class. I use feminist theories of the social construction of gender to explore the relationship between the construction of masculine identity and boyhood participation in organized sports. I examine family, peer group, and community relationships as key contexts within which young males become committed to athletic careers. I argue that organized spor…

  • Masculinities and Athletic Careers

    Open Access•Michael A Messner, Michael Messner•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•1989•Cited by: 38•References: 18

Men's studies' scholars have begun to critically examine and deconstruct the meaning of masculinity, but thus far, most of their studies have focused exclusively on the lives of white, middle-class men, ignoring the implications of racial and social class differences and inequalities among men. Sport sociologists, on the other hand, have examined the causes and consequences of class and recial inequalities in the sports world, but they rarely int…
