Assyrian Clay Hands from Khorsabad
Ah Clara, I am not worthy of your love
In setting Chamisso's Frauenliebe und Leben, Schumann discovered in the poems a subtext that he reflected in the music. Although the heroine of the poems manifestly aspires to be humble and submissive, as was widely expected of women in her day, she emerges, to those who read closely, as more independent and spirited than she herself knows. By shaping details in his songs' vocal line, Schumann captures the heroine's independence of spirit, as wel…

A Group of Near Eastern Bronzes from Olympia
Recently a reconstruction was published for the fragmented remains of at least 13 registers of repoussé bronze frieze of Near Eastern workmanship, layered with fragments of Greek incised bronze. These were excavated from Well 17 near the north wall of the stadium at Olympia in February 1960 by the Deutsches Archaölogisches Institut. Nearly 30 years were spent on piecing together the fragments and on their subsequent conservation, analysis, and in…

Sargonid Sculpture and the Late Assyrian Cubit
During the Spring of 1991, the Fall of 1993 and the Summer of 1994, a major effort was completed to measure all the surviving untrimmed, monolithic and essentially entirely preserved Late Assyrian sculptured slabs and figures from Khorsabad, dating to the time of Sargon II, that are now held in Western museums. The programme of measurement was undertaken as the Paris slabs were in the process of being installed in their new home in the Richelieu …

Profiles of Kouroi
This article is another in a series exploring ways in which analyses of the proportions of Greek sculpture, based on measurements, can contribute to our understanding of both art and civilization during the archaic period. Z-score profile analysis, a recently developed statistical method, provides a graph or profile of the proportions of a statue. The distinctive pattern of these proportions may be visually examined and compared with the profiles…
Profiles of Korai
This article is one of a series exploring ways in which analyses of the proportions of Greek sculptures, based on measurements, will contribute to our understanding of both art and civilization during the archaic period. A newly developed statistical methodology, z-score profile analysis, translates the proportions of a statue, derived from its measurements, into a graph, illuminating the distinctive pattern followed by the proportions of a parti…
Proportions of Korai
Computer executed statistical techniques have been used to assist in the analysis of the proportions of twenty-six archaic Greek korai. The korai have been compared with one another, with published data for women and men, with both draped and nude kouroi, with Cypriot draped figures, with an Assyrian statue and with examples of the Egyptian canons for both female and male figures. Conclusions have been reached concerning pairs of similar statues,…

The Proportions of Kouroi
Computer executed statistical procedures have been applied to the study of archaic kouroi in the hope of determining if any Egyptian influence can be detected. A comprehensive study of the proportions of the kouroi shows that certain kouroi are similar in proportions to the Egyptian second canon and that others are not. The kouroi most like the Egyptian canon span at least three-quarters of a century (late seventh to late sixth centuries B. C.) a…
