  • Coastal changes and human occupation in the eastern part of Thessaloniki Bay

    Open Access•Jakub Niebieszczański, Iwona Hildebrandt-Radke et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The Holocene marine transgression in the Aegean Sea area has significantly impacted prehistoric societies. Toumba Gona is a tell site located at the mouth of the Anthemous River, east of Thessaloniki Bay. According to earlier research, the site should be dated at most to the late stage of the Early Bronze Age. Geoarchaeological research by means of electrical resistivity tomography, vibra‐coring, sedimentological analysis, and radiocarbon dating …

  • Unlocking building biographies during the Late Bronze Age in Central Macedonia

Kalliopi Efkleidou, Maria Karantoni et al.•ARTICLE•JOURNAL OF GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY•2022

The scope of the present paper is to scrutinise the evidence regarding settlement continuity, especially where continuous replication of the same buildings is involved, and to investigate how it was practiced in Late Bronze Age mound settlements in terms of building methods. Furthermore, we aim to investigate how building continuity or change related to people’s lives and the spatial organisation of their mundane activities and social practices w…

  • Smart Eye

Open Access•Kalliopi Efkleidou, Dimitrios Kaimaris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer Applications…•2022

The Smart Eye Application is an augmented reality app for mobile devices that enables the in-situ 3D visualization of underground and inaccessible to the public archaeological sites and monuments. Accessibility to excavated archaeological sites and monuments is often hindered for reasons of preservation or urban development. Portable finds are transferred and, in some cases, exhibited in local museums, but the non-portable remains of ancient stru…

  • A bottom-up view of food surplus

Erika Nitsch, Stelios Andreou et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2017•Cited by: 36•References: 63

We use stable isotope analysis of crop, faunal and human remains to investigate agricultural strategies and diet at EBA-LBA Archontiko and MBA-LBA Thessaloniki Toumba. Crop production strategies varied between settlements, phases and species; flexibility is also apparent within the crop storesof individual houses. Escalating manuring intensity at LBA Thessaloniki Toumba coincides with large co-residential ‘blocks’ geared towards hoarding of agric…

  • Raw material sources of knapped stone tools from the excavation of the Early Bronze Age site at Toumba Thessaloniki, Greece

Open Access•Stamatia Karageorgiou, Aikaterini Kostaki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016

This study investigates the origin of the lithic findings from the prehistoric site at Toumba, Thessaloniki in Greece, during the Early Bronze Age (EBA). The artefacts from the excavation were studied in order to compare the raw materials utilized for the manufacture of these tools with the geological occurrences of the corresponding materials in the broader region. This research provides evidence for the provenance of these materials and consequ…

  • Technology Transfer at the Periphery of the Mycenaean World

    Open Access•J Buxeda I Garrigós, R E Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2003•Cited by: 12•References: 13

The study of technology transfer in pottery production to the periphery of the Mycenaean world has been addressed by considering two different areas, southern Italy and central Macedonia. Technological features such as ceramic paste, decoration and firing have been determined for different ceramic groups established according to provenance criteria. The studies of technology and provenance have been performed following an archaeometric approach, …
