The world may not be just for you but you'd better not say it: On the social value of expressing personal belief in a just world
The expression of personal belief in a just world ( PBJW ) has been discussed as a criterion of excellence in social judgments. In four experimental studies we hypothesized and found that targets who express high versus low PBJW are judged as more: (i) deserving of success and (ii) suited to socio‐organizational expectations. The four studies show that suitability to socio‐organizational expectations mediates the relation between PBJW expressed a…
The Social Value of Expressing Personal and General Belief in a Just World in Different Contexts
Are victims also judged more positively if they say their lives are just
Non-victims who express high versus low personal belief in a just world (PBJW) are judged as having more social value, both social utility (i.e., market value) and social desirability (i.e., affective value). Our goal was to test whether this pattern differed when the targets were presented as innocent or non-innocent victims of enduring suffering. A hundred and eighty-six participants of both sexes took part in our 2 (degree of PBJW expressed: h…
To Believe or Not to Believe in a Just World? The Psychological Costs of Threats to the Belief in a Just World and the Role of Attributions
Belief in a Just World (BJW) research has typically studied how individuals maintain and defend their beliefs from possible threats. However, none of this work has examined the psychological costs of threats to one's BJW. In the present research we tested its consequences on self-esteem. Focusing on threats related to relevant in-groups, we aimed to (1) understand the role of group identification in these processes and (2) identify the psychologi…
The Buffering-Boosting Hypothesis of the Expression of General and Personal Belief in a Just World for Successes and Failures
Although past research on the expression of belief in a just world (BJW) identified such statements as judgment norms, it has not ascertained whether their social value holds when individuals refer to good and bad outcomes. We investigated whether this is the case - a more stringent test of the "BJW as judgment norms" view. Participants judged the targets on two dimensions of social value: social desirability and social utility. We hypothesized, …
On the Normativity of Expressing the Belief in a Just World: Empirical Evidence
