  • Self-Reports in Cross-Cultural Contexts

    Steven L Mcnabb, Steven Mcnabb•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1990•Cited by: 5•References: 10

The focus of this paper is self-reports of subjective conditions, such as opinions, attitudes, and psychological states. Most research shows that the apparent accuracy and meaning of subjective self-reports vary according to numerous cultural, social, and psychological factors. The collection and interpretation of subjective self-reports in cross-cultural settings may therefore present diverse opportunities for misinterpretation. An analysis of s…

  • The Uses of "Inaccurate" Data: A Methodological Critique and Applications of Alaska Native Data

    Open Access•Steven L Mcnabb•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1990•Cited by: 7•References: 18

The ramifications of a current debate about informant accuracy are shown to extend well beyond informant accuracy per se, since they invite scrutiny of fundamental epistemological assumptions. Accuracy is analyzed as a complex concept that must be evaluated along several dimensions, suggesting that multiple standards of "accuracy" require multiple methods of data collection and interpretation known generally as triangulation. Alaska Native data c…

  • Logical Inconsistencies

    Steven L Mcnabb, Steven Mcnabb•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1989•References: 16

Risk analysis underlies nearly all of the research programs conducted by government agencies charged with managing human and environmental impacts. This has been the case since the appointment of the federal Science Advisory Board during the depression, and is evident in the work of numerous agencies since then. Risk analysis is, loosely speaking, also the mission of the Minerals Management Service (Department of the Interior) Social and Economic…

    Lynn A Robbins, Lynn Robbins et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1987•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This study compares impacts of oil developments on the North Slope with perceptions of expected oil impacts in the Norton Sound-Bering Sea region of Alaska. Norton Sound-Bering Sea Native communities will not be entitled to oil royalties and other local government income because developments will go beyond their territorial jurisdiction, unlike North Slope villages. Although attitude surveys show opposition to developments based on impressions ab…

  • Social Indicators in Native Village Alaska 1

    Joseph G Jorgensen, Richard Mccleary et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1985•Cited by: 13•References: 6

Social indicators-constructs to assess, and to measure changes to socio-economic conditions of life for contemporary societies-are analyzed for eight Aleutian and northwestern Alaskan villages whose native residents derive their sustenance from hunting, gathering, and fishing. Because of federal, state, and oil corporation actions, these villages and others like them are changing rapidly and dramatically. The analysis proposes a structure for the…
