  • The State and the Citizen: Overview of a complex relationship from a paradigmatic perspective

Open Access•Camelia Florela Voinea, Martin Neumann et al.•ARTICLE•Quality & Quantity•2023

Notwithstanding the huge literature on state studies, both definition and method have always been subject of intense debate. This debate is still open and equally intense despite two millennia of philosophical and methodological attempts to define what the state is, to describe how the state works, and why does it work. As times, geopolitical contexts, and human action have shaped the historical and conceptual trajectory of polity studies, the th…

  • Can Lawlike Rules Emerge without the Intervention of Legislators

    Open Access•Klaus G Troitzsch•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2018•References: 4

The paper shows that in an artificial society lawlike rules emerge “as a result of individual action but without being designed by any individual” agents [Hay44, p. 288] and discusses earlier literature on the topic. The first example which this paper uses is an artificial society of car drivers moving between their homes and their working places on streets with two lanes crossing each other at right angles. Car drivers start using the left or ri…

  • Axiomatic Theory and Simulation: A Philosophy of Science Perspective on Schelling's Segregation Model

    Open Access•Klaus G Troitzsch•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2017

The paper uses Schelling's famous segregation model and a number of extensions to show how a reconstruction of the theory behind these models along the lines of the 'non-statement view' on empirical science can contribute to a better understanding of these models and a more straightforward implementation. A short introduction to the procedure of reconstructing a theory is given, using an extremely simple theory from mechanics. The same procedure …

  • What One Can Learn from Extracting OWL Ontologies from a NetLogo Model That Was Not Designed for Such an Exercise

    Open Access•Klaus G Troitzsch•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2015

    J. Gary Polhills forum paper in this issue was an invitation to try the OWL extension on a model that was written more than a year ago. Download and installation was a matter of a few minutes, extending the old model with a few lines as shown in the paper was not a problem either, visualising the owl output with different versions of Protégé was a little more difficult, but in the end showed interesting suggestions how to improve the original ver…

  • Analysing Simulation Results Statistically: Does Significance Matter

    Klaus G Troitzsch•CHAPTER•Interdisciplinary applications of…•2014

Many papers on simulation in the social sciences come up with significance tests in which the authors describe the effect of a parameter on some simulation outcome as significant on some level of significance. This chapter discusses the question whether significance tests on simulation results are meaningful, and it argues that it is the effect size much more than the existence of the effect that matters and that it is the description of the dist…

  • Interactions between party members and local party activists: A formal model and its empirical application

    Klaus G Troitzsch•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1987•References: 3

Data taken from two surveys among party members and local party activists are used to test a formal theory of intra‐party interaction at a low regional level. For this purpose a miniature version of legitimation theory is axiomatized according to Joseph D. Sneed's proposals. A possible partial model for this miniature theory is defined, terms theoretical in this theory are introduced to make up a possible model of the theory, and several variants…
