Abram de Swaan is a Dutch social scientist with a background in mathematical political science and game theory, a subsequent training in psychoanalysis, and a lifelong career in historical and comparative sociology. His work is broad and multifaceted, and his classic books on the welfare state, the global language system, and genocidal regimes, written in English, are outstanding sociological studies. This chapter explores the translation and international recognition of Dutch writers. It identifies a general pattern structured by three successive circuits of selection, diffusion, valorization and recognitio…

Combining methods in social scientific research has recently gained momentum through a research strand called Mixed Methods Research (MMR). This approach, which explicitly aims to offer a framework for combining methods, has rapidly spread through the social and behavioural sciences, and this article offers an analysis of the approach from a field theoretical perspective. After a brief outline of the MMR program, we ask how its recent rise can be…

• French Sociology

    J Heilbron•BOOK•French Sociology•2015

French Sociology offers a uniquely comprehensive view of the oldest and still one of the most vibrant national traditions in sociology. Johan Heilbron covers the development of sociology in France from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century through the discipline's expansion in the late twentieth century, tracing the careers of figures from Auguste Comte to Pierre Bourdieu. Presenting fresh interpretations of how renowned thinkers such as…

In this article we assess the general claim that Durkheimian sociology has reactionary, fascist, or totalitarian affinities, and the specific claim that Marcel Déat’s Durkheimian background was a significant factor in his becoming a Nazi sympathizer. We do so by comparing the different trajectories of the interwar generation of young Durkheimians and find that only one, i.e. Déat, can be said to have become fascist. Indeed, what characterizes thi…

Auguste Comte's historical and differential theory of science inaugurated an original tradition in epistemology. His theory of the sciences was a detailed elaboration of a historical and differential theory of science. This tradition may be regarded as specifically French. It started to develop at the end of the nineteenth century, when academic philosophers such as Boutroux began to be interested in Comte's work. He introduced both terms: positi…

Exploring the 'globalization' of the social sciences, this article first presents an historical interpretation of how transnational exchange in the social sciences has evolved. Earlier forms of international circulation are distinct from the more global arrangements that have emerged since the late twentieth century. Considering this globalizing field in more detail, it is argued that its predominant characteristic is a core-periphery structure, …

Open Access•J Heilbron, Nicolas Guilhot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•2008•Cited by: 76•References: 47

Historical accounts of the social sciences have too often accepted local or national institu-tions as a self-evident framework of analysis, instead of considering them as being embed-ded in transnational relations of various kinds. Evolving patterns of transnational mobility and exchange cut through the neat distinction between the local, the national, and the inter-national, and thus represent an essential component in the dynamics of the social…

    Open Access•J Heilbron•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•1999•Cited by: 30•References: 8

This article argues that the translation of books may be fruitfully understood as constituting a cultural world-system. The working of this system, based on a core-periphery structure, accounts for the uneven flows of translations between language groups as well as for the varying role of translations within language groups. The final part outlines how this general sociological model may be further developed

On the basis of an empirical analysis of the emergence, spread and transformation of No Holds Barred fighting contests during the 1990s, we argue that Norbert Elias's model of sportization represents a fruitful but not sufficiently differentiated framework for understanding the recent development of combat sports and fighting contests. Although the martial arts in the 20th century provide striking examples of processes of sportization and para-sp…

In this article, the authors address the question of whether and how the appreciation of popular music consumers has globalized in the four decades since the mid-1960s. They use information from American, Dutch, French, and German popular music charts from 1965 through 2006. They find no corroboration for an overall trend toward an internationalization of hits. However, important shifts are noticeable underneath the surface. For the period up unt…
