Worldbuilding, narrative, and agency in the intersemiotic translations of ‘The Witcher’
This study examines the complex intersemiotic translations of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series across multiple media platforms: from novels to video games and subsequently to a Netflix television adaptation. Through an interdisciplinary framework drawing on Translation, Adaptation, and Game Studies, this research investigates how narrative structures, worldbuilding elements, and audience agency transform across different media. Particular a…
War Trauma in Young Women's Memories of a Violent Past in Southeast Asia
Children's classics such as Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl (1947/1952) have proven to be very influential in helping young readers understand both the horror and the unending tedium of war. They have also been instrumental in encouraging publishers to make available other first-person narratives of children traumatised by war. However, life narratives of war have so far been explicitly white and western, overlooking stories from Asia and …
Language hierarchies and community resilience
This article examines the role of language in enhancing disaster resilience for cyclone-affected communities in rural Malawi. It focuses on the linguistic challenges faced in humanitarian aid efforts in a multilingual context, where English dominates institutional communication, and Chichewa is largely used for community outreach, despite most affected communities primarily speaking local minority languages such as Chiyao. Drawing on surveys cond…
Bridging linguistic and cultural divides
Translators and interpreters serve as critical nodes of communication in crises, tasked with conveying crucial information across linguistic and cultural barriers in challenging scenarios. In these contexts, trust forms the cornerstone of effective communication, influencing public response and shaping the overall effectiveness of crisis management and relief distribution. Despite the vital role of trust in crisis communication, there is a scarci…
The Routledge Handbook of Translating and Interpreting Conflict
Modern-day peace support operations are increasingly multilingual and multinational and have seen an extended use of local civilians for language-related tasks. If their role as interpreters, language assistants and/or “fixers” has been explored by interpreting and translation studies in the last two decades, then their recruitment and management have largely been overlooked in military settings. This chapter aims to identify the key challenges p…
Mapping Cultural Flows through Contemporary Art in Translation
This article examines the role of translation in contemporary art through a case study of the curatorial project Translation(s), curated by Zoran Poposki in collaboration with Laurence Wood, realized in three editions over five years and involving more than 30 video works by international artists. By exploring the dual significance of translation as a motif and a method, this article investigates how artists engage with the complexities of commun…
Performativity and intersemiotic translation in contemporary art
This paper considers the intersection of performativity and intersemiotic translation in contemporary art through a case study of a new media art project aimed at visually transcoding Dung Kai-Cheung’s novel Atlas: The Archaeology of an Imaginary City, a book of postmodern fiction about the palimpsest nature of Hong Kong as a linguistic landscape and a city of (cultural) translation. In Hong Kong Atlas, the locations in Dung’s book are performati…

The Western Balkans in translated children’s literature
This study approaches translations as framing and representation sites that can serve to either contest or promote stereotypes. Critically looking at textual and visual images of the source culture, the discussion considers how the particular location of different participants in the translation production process contributes to the presentation of violence as a predominant image of Western Balkan nations. The analysis uncovers networks of source…
