  • Designing the memory of terror, negotiating national memory: The National September 11 Memorial and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice

    Open Access•Marita Sturken•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2023•References: 2

This essay analyzes two American memorials that were built in the post-9/11 era: the National September 11 Memorial in New York City, which opened in 2011, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which opened in Montgomery, Alabama, in 2018. Both of these memorials pay tribute to victims of terrorism, the first to victims of foreign terrorism and the second to victims of lynchings, a form of racial terrorism within the United States. Thi…

  • Containing absence, shaping presence at ground zero

    Open Access•Marita Sturken•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This essay analyzes the dynamics of absence and presence at the 9/11 memorial and museum in New York, as elements of their design and aspects of the haunting of the site. Of the 2753 victims, 1113 have never been identified, despite a huge and expensive forensic identification process, and this absence has been a shaping force at the site. While the designs of the memorial and the museum both evoke absence, both also attempt to render the dead pr…

  • The objects that lived: The 9/11 Museum and material transformation

    Open Access•Marita Sturken•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2015•Cited by: 15•References: 6

This essay analyzes the September 11 Memorial and Museum at Ground Zero in New York through the framework of memory and materiality. The 9/11 memorial and museum are both sites through which the material transformation of 9/11 is mediated—through preservation, re-creation, and fetishization and through narratives of absence, presence, and remains. I examine the meanings of material transformation in the dust that emerged in the wake of the twin t…

The 9/11 Memorial Museum and the Remaking of Ground Zero Marita Sturken (bio) In the vast Foundation Hall of the National September 11 Memorial Museum, which opened in May 2014 at Ground Zero in New York, reside two objects that embody in many ways its complex, contradictory, moving yet problematic project. The first is the very large steel column that stands in the middle of the room, commanding over the space. Known as the Last Column, this thi…

It analyzes Berlant's concepts of infantile citizenship, the affective relationship to the nation, the intimate public sphere, the emergence of a national sexuality, and the counter-practices of “Diva” citizenship. The essay argues that Queen of Americ…

This article examines the interrelationship of torture and comfort as a key feature of the United States project of American Empire, examining how the U.S. practice of torture is mediated in American culture, in particular through the distancing strategies of domestication, trivialization, kitschification, and irony. • The Unfinished Bombing: Oklahoma City in American Memory

    Marita Sturken•REVIEW•Journal of American History•2002

Once in a long while, the publication of a book has a particularly fortuitous timing, in which its relevance seems charged. Such was the case with the publication of Edward T. Linenthal's book The Unfinished Bombing within a few weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Linenthal's book is an impressive achievement in and of itself. It is, and probably will remain, the definitive study of the effects of the 1995 terrorist bombing on Oklahoma…
