  • Self, World, Environment

    Open Access•Graham K Riach•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Francophone…•2026

Al…

  • Henrietta Rose-Innes and the politics of space

    Open Access•Graham K Riach•ARTICLE•The Journal of Commonwealth…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 13

In “Falling”, a short story from Henrietta Rose-Innes’s 2010 collection Homing, there is a productively unresolved tension between the aesthetic demands of spatial form and the spatially segregated nation of post-apartheid South Africa. I track why spatial politics remain central to understanding contemporary South Africa and its literature, and set this against W. J. T. Mitchell’s expanded conception of Joseph Frank’s theory of spatial form, in …

  • Concrete fragments”

    Open Access•Graham K Riach•ARTICLE•The Journal of Commonwealth…•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 5

South Africa has a long and rich tradition of short story writing, stretching from the early oral-style tale (MacKenzie, 1999), through the writing of the “fabulous fifties” (Driver, 2012; R. Gaylard, 2008), to the most recent post-apartheid texts. In this interview, Henrietta Rose-Innes describes her practice as a short story writer, noting how it differs from that of writing novels or poetry. For Rose-Innes, the short story offers a way to capt…

  • The Late Nadine Gordimer

    Graham K Riach•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2016•Cited by: 4

Towards the end of her writing life, Nadine Gordimer’s style became increasingly marked by characteristics that Theodor Adorno and Edward Said have attributed to ‘late style’: syntactic and interpretational difficulty, structural fracture, and a heightened degree of self-reflexivity. I discuss some of the critical formulations that have developed around late style, then analyse Gordimer’s individual late style in the titular stories from her thre…

  • Sticking Together

    Graham K Riach•ARTICLE•Safundi•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 4

“Propaganda by Monuments” was published in Staffrider magazine in 1992, and is the first example of Ivan Vladislavić’s experiments with collage techniques, an interest he has sustained through to his recent work in The Loss Library and Other Stories (2011). From “Propaganda” to The Loss Library’s “The Cold Storage Club,” there is a shift in how he uses collage, from emphasizing juxtaposition to foregrounding absence. Vladislavić’s texts and the i…
