A Longitudinal Study of Self-Esteem
A theoretical approach to studying health behaviors in adolescents
Alcohol use and misuse among adolescents is a major health problem that has been targeted for intervention at the national level. Studies show that alcohol use often begins in preadolescence (8 to 11 years) and, for some youths, escalates to heavy use during senior high school. A number of factors, such as parental and peer norms and attitudes, environmental influences, and self-efficacy, have been identified as predicting alcohol use. Less is kn…
School-Based Research on the Prevention of Adolescent Alcohol Use and Misuse
In this article, I first review the early school-based approaches to the prevention of adolescent alcohol use and misuse (AAUM), problems associated with the earlier studies, remedies that have been suggested in response to these problems, and current school-based approaches to the prevention of AAUM. Findings from recent studies that I conducted and interpretations of these results are summarized. I discuss issues that I, and other currently act…
Psychometric properties of component and global measures of structured interview assessed type A behavior in a population sample
Structured interview (SI) assessments of global and component Type A behavior were conducted in a general population sample of 903 respondents. Correlations among all the measures were positive and significant. A factor analysis revealed that the common component variance was explained by a single underlying factor. Interrater reliabilities were approximately 0.5 to 0.7 for the individual components and 0.8 for both the SI global Type A and a sec…
New markers for type A behavior
This study tested the hypothesis that the Type A behavior pattern and its components are associated with increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system. To do this, we employed two new markers of sympathetic tone--pupil size and platelet catecholamine content. Thirty-three healthy males were blindly rated for Type A behavior and verbal stylistic components by Structured Interview. Adrenergic tone to the pupils was assessed from pupil diamet…
Demographic correlates of SI assessments of type A behavior
A survey interview and the structured Type A interview (SI) were administered to 903 residents of Washtenaw County, Michigan aged 18 or older selected by a multistage probability sample of households. No bivariate relationship was found between Type A behavior and sex or marital status. Type A behavior was positively related to income and education. The prevalence of Type A behavior was highest among those who were employed in white-collar occupa…
Prediction of Objective Child Motivation Test Scores from Parents' Reports of Child-Rearing Practices
The mothers and fathers of 310 junior high school children completed a child-rearing questionnaire and the children completed the School Motivation Analysis Test. The mothers' and fathers' data were factor analyzed separately and factor scores computed and employed as predictor variables in separate sets of multiple regression analyses employing the childrens' school motivation scores as criteria. Of the 40 possible full model R 2 s 29 were signi…
Gambling
This paper reports the results from a national survey of gambling behavior, social problems, and attitudes toward the legalization of gambling. Non‐bettors perceived more negative consequences and fewer positive consequences associated with the legalization of gambling than did bettors. One negative consequence perceived by a majority of both groups was an increase in political corruption. The level of gambling activity was positively associated …
The Structure of Motivational Manifestations as Measured in the Laboratory Rat
One hundred and thirty-four subjects were run under differing conditions of reward and deprivation for fear, gregariousness, and thirst in three separate mazes. Thirty-six dependent variable measures were taken in two of the mazes and twenty-nine in the third. The intercorrelations among the variables were factored separately for each of the three mazes. Thirteen factors were extracted in each case and congruence coefficients computed. Eight of t…

Cross-Validational Evidence on the Dimensions of Problem Behavior in the Early Grades
One hundred forty-seven children in the first through the third grades were rated by their teachers on a behavior problem inventory employed in previous studies. The data were subjected to a principal axis factor analysis and rotated to an oblique position. Congruence coefficients were computed among the twelve factors resulting from the current analysis, and the eight factors extracted in an earlier study. Six of the factor matches were signific…
Evidence on the Simple Structure and Factor Invariance Achieved by Five Rotational Methods on Four Types of Data
Five methods of factor rotation-Maxplane, Oblimax, Promax, Harris- Kaiser, and Varimax-were applied to four types of data-questionnaire, objeckive test, a physical problem, and a plasmode. In addition, the Maxplane procedure was followed in each case by Rotoplot-assisted visual robations. The results were compared with respect to simple structure (hyperplane percentages) and factor invaniance (congruence coefficient). It was concluded that, in ge…
Prediction of School Achievement from Motivation, Personality, and Ability Measures
Personality (16 PF), Motivation (MAT) and Ability (CFIQ) tests were given to 169 6th grade and 142 7th grade children. Approximately 3 mo. later the same children were given standardized achievement tests (ETS) in the areas of mathematics, science, social studies, and reading and their performance on these subjects was predicted from the personality, motivation and ability measures. It was concluded that personality, motivation and ability variab…
Changes in Objective Measures of Fear Motivation as a Function of Laboratory-Controlled Manipulation
The Motivational Analysis Test was administered prior and subsequent to an experimental manipulation designed to increase the Fear erg for 74 Ss. A control group ( N = 33) received a filler task during the manipulation period. A pilot study showed no significant main effect of pretest or significant pretest-treatment interaction. There was a significant treatment by occasion interaction for the Unintegrated MAT Fear score, as hypothesized. The re…
Childrearing Antecedents of Early School Child Personality Factors
The parents of 156 children six to eight years of age were tested on a childrearing questionnaire adapted from the Sears et at (1957, 1965) interview schedule; and the children were tested on the 13-factor Early School Personality Questionnaire (ESPQ}. Separate oblique analyses were carried out for the mothers' questionnaire, the fathers' questionnaire, and the ESPQ. Factor scores were then computed for each child, seven scores being fathers' chi…
Reinforcement Schedule, Intertrial Activity, and Verbal Operant Conditioning
An investigation of the effect of different reinforcement schedules (RS) upon conditioning and awareness in a verbal operant conditioning situation (VOC). 40 S s were given Taffel's sentence-completion task with one-half of S s given an intertrial color-naming task (ICN). S s were placed on a 100%, 66%, 33%, or 0% RS for Trials 11–100, with no reinforcement given during Trials 101 to 150. The 100% and 66% RS groups showed conditioning of “I-we” r…
