Racial Doubt
With a focus on nineteenth-century Cuba, Víctor Goldgel Carballo conceptualizes the analytical category of racial doubt: the hesitation produced by divergent, contradictory, or ambiguous understandings of race. Racial doubt is the flip side of racialism, or of the assumption that social hierarchies are based on the existence of races, imagined as natural or prior to those hierarchies. Mapping key moments of a century that witnessed the peak of ra…

Forty-one years a slave
On the basis of a previously unstudied testimony, this study approaches the life of a slave from a methodological standpoint at the crossroads between Literary Studies and History. On 4 October 1853, a black man stepped into the U.S. consulate in Havana. According to the testimony he gave that day, he had been born free in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1812, at the age of ten or twelve, he was hired to work on a sloop that took him to Cuba, wher…
Slavery, mobility, and networks in nineteenth-century Cuba
In the midst of a major economic restructuring known as Second Slavery, which included important debates between abolitionist and proslavery interests, Cuba experienced the emergence of new forms of mobility and networks. After being forcibly moved across the Atlantic, enslaved Africans were moved within Cuba, and sometimes sold to owners in other Caribbean islands or the U.S. South. A significant fraction of them managed to move on their own wil…
Spectral Realism
Focussing on Cirilo Villaverde's canonical novel Cecilia Valdés (1882), this article explores the neglected spectral dimension of its realism. I argue that, while explicitly denying the existence of ghosts, Villaverde engages with their false but real appearance as the only way to accurately represent a world marked by the invisibilization of certain lives. I call this dimension of his writing spectral realism: a mode of representing socially pro…
High-Speed Enlightenment’
Drawing upon studies of media history and print culture, this article analyzes the relationship among early-nineteenth-century Latin American periodicals, literary institutions, and new experiences of time and history. Framing these periodicals as a new medium which boomed during and immediately after the wars of independence, it underscores their impact upon forms of reading and writing, as well as their importance for concurrent and later debat…
