Long-term impact of Diabetes Prevention Program interventions on walking endurance
Objectives: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes are associated with poor walking endurance, a marker of physical function. We aimed to examine the long-term effects of metformin or intensive lifestyle intervention in adults at high risk of T2D on their 6-min walk test (6MWT) performance. Methods: Participants were randomized in the 3-year Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to one of the three groups: lifestyle intervention, metformin, or placebo…

Relation of Diabetes to Cognitive Function in Hispanics/Latinos of Diverse Backgrounds in the United States
Objectives: To examine the association between diabetes and cognitive function within U.S. Hispanics/Latinos of Central American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and South American background. Method: This cross-sectional study included 9,609 men and women (mean age = 56.5 years), who are members of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. We classified participants as having diabetes, prediabetes, or normal glucose regulati…
Urban-Dwelling Community Members' Views on Biomedical Research Engagement
In this study, we explore community members' overall understanding and experience with biomedical research engagement. We conducted a qualitative analysis to explore a concept that emerged but was not specifically addressed in a pre-existing dataset obtained using four focus group sessions with 30 urban-dwelling community members. Transcripts were read in an iterative process, and an emergent content analysis was performed. Five main themes were …
Glycemia, Diabetes Status, and Cognition in Hispanic Adults Aged 55–64 Years
OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of glycemia and diabetes status with cognition among 600 Hispanics aged 55 to 64 years from Northern Manhattan. METHODS: Diabetes was ascertained by history or hemoglobin A1c. Normal glucose tolerance and prediabetes were ascertained with hemoglobin A1c. Memory was assessed with the Selective Reminding Test. Executive abilities were assessed using the Color Trails 1 and 2 and verbal fluency test. The cross-s…
Association of Vascular Risk Factors With Cognition in a Multiethnic Sample
CVRFs are associated with poorer cognitive functioning, but not cognitive decline, among minority older adults. These relationships vary by gender and medication use. Consideration of unique racial, ethnic, and cultural factors is needed when examining relationships between CVRFs and cognition
