Race and populism on the left
Scholars generally accept that populists on the left are inclusionary while their counterparts on the right are exclusionary. We question that assumption and ask if populists of the left are also capable of inflicting exclusionary attacks on their opponents. In this paper, we examine the racial dimensions of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's rhetoric. Analysts who are accustomed to blatant expressions of racism on the right may overlook the subt…
Adolescent trajectories in situations of adversity
The context in which youths grow up influences the lives they are capable of living. Using a mixed‐methods approach, this study analyses the risk and promotive factors associated with educational and leadership outcomes in Colombian youth. Results suggest that poverty and inadequate social services are key obstacles to the attainment of positive school and leadership outcomes, while parental involvement is among the most important promotive facto…
Learning inequality during Covid-19
During 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic unleashed a socioeconomic crisis in most countries, as well as strict restrictions on mobility and social distancing were implemented. The pandemic brought a severe socioeconomic shock -decreasing economic activity- and forced policy responses that affected the education sector -notably school closures-. There is scarce evidence on the implications of the pandemic and its socioeconomic consequences on learning i…
Is the proportion of female STEM teachers in secondary education related to women’s enrollment in tertiary education STEM programs
There is significant underrepresentation of women majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) internationally as well as in Colombia. This study analyzes the relation between being exposed to female STEM teachers during secondary education and female graduates’ enrollment in tertiary STEM programs. For this purpose, the study uses data from secondary education graduates from Bogotá between 2010 and 2013, and employs a linear pro…

Tracing out the relationship betw…
Growing Up Guerreándola”
In this article, we argue that we have much to learn from the adolescent developmental experiences of social justice activists on the frontlines. Our team of authors includes the four youth social leaders at the center of the empirical work emerging from our qualitative research. We ground the Freirean concept of conscientização, roughly interpreted in English as critical consciousness building, in the lived experiences of these four youth social…

Crime and Education in a Model of Information Transmission
We model the decisions of young individuals to stay in school or drop out and engage in criminal activities. We build on the literature on human capital and crime engagement and use the framework of Banerjee (1993) that assumes that the information needed to engage in crime arrives in the form of a rumour and that individuals update their beliefs about the profitability of crime relative to education. These assumptions allow us to study the effec…

Diferenciales salariales entre los trabajadores del sector público y del sector privado en Colombia en 1997
This paper uses the Roy model to measure the size of the wage differential between the workers of the public and private sector in Columbia in 1997. The use of this model is important since it eliminates the self-selection bias of the coefficients of the Mincer equations that appears when these equations are estimated separately for both sectors. It is also useful to have a reliable measure of the wage a worker will have if he would have worked i…
