A Comparative Investigation of the Semantic Structure of Language
The results of a semantic analysis of 20 languages established quantitative parameters intended to describe the semantic structure of language in general. Representative languages were drawn from nine different language families, both literate and nonliterate populations, ancient civilizations and contemporary nations and ethnic groups. Random samples of 100 word and phrase units were drawn from bilingual dictionaries. Each word was classified in…

The Systemic Linkage Hypothesis and Role Consensus Patterns in Hospital- Community Relations
This report accounts for the systematic differences observed when hospital administrators, hospital board members, and community leaders evaluate role expectations of their own and each other's positions. Taking as assumptions a systemic linkage hypothesis and an interaction-obligation hypothesis, specific predictions concerning the differences among the above groups are derived. The predictions conform to the actual patterns observed. Structured…
Administrator Responsibility in Large and Small Hospitals in a Metropolitan Community
Among the many hypotheses tested by Neal Gross, Ward S. Mason and Alexander W. McEachern in their ground-breaking studies of the school superintendency role was one predicting that the definition of the division of responsibilities between an executive subordinate and superordinate policymakers would be affected by the size of the formal organization.1 The result of their test of this hypothesis (which will be specified in detail below) was somew…
Predicting a Community Decision: A Test of the Miller-Form Theory
Two proposed constitutional amendments appearing on the November 4, 1958 ballot became issues of general community concern in Denver, Colorado. One, a right to work amendment proposal, aroused a high level of community interest and activity; the other, a civil service amendment proposal, stimulated relatively less community interest and activity. This setting provided an opportunity for an independent prediction test of the Miller-Form theory of …
Evidence and Procedure Characteristics of 'Reliable' Propositions in Social Science
How have differences in research procedures affected the reliability of propositions advanced in American social-science research journals? Data on a hundred and twenty independently tested propositions are presented in this study. When "more reliable" propositions were identified by their confirmation in independent replication tests, the original formulations of these propositions proved to be significantly associated with the following evidenc…
