Intuitive Sensory Presentiation and Recollection: A Phenomenological Interpretation of the Deer Dance
Based on ethnographic work among Indigenous people of northwestern Mexico and on Martin Heidegger’s philosophical writings on being and time, this chapter addresses the phenomenon of human-animal transformation as practiced by the Yoreme. Music and song evoke memories of other temporalities and experiences of transcendence and, thus, help skilled deer dancers to become the animal, a transformation that is perceived as real, not as symbolic. By op…
Del Viejo Mundo a nuevas costas
The accordion and its many variations -from the concertina and the diatonic button accordion, to the hurdy-gurdy and the bandoneon- have flourished and taken roots in several cultures. Commonly known as the 'common man's piano,' this instrument became a medium for the growth of folkloric music, and very popular in many regions of the world, particularly in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. Because of this, its use as a 'one-man band' …
Miteinander musizieren: Über den Nutzen von Musikprojekten für angehende Musikpädagog*innen und junge Asylsuchende
This article critically reflects a week-long music project that involved students of the music pedagogy master's programme at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and unaccompanied minor refugees of the nearby transit center. The project highlights the potential of musical activities, such as playing music, listening to and talking about music, dancing and building instruments, in the transcultural context of refugee work and point…
Cumbia! Scenes of a Migrant Latin American Music Genre
The 11 essays compiled in this volume present the reader with different scenes of a music genre that has become fully engaged with the global marketplace. Based on extensive fieldwork on multiple sites, they challenge us to recognize cumbia as a transnational and global musical phenomenon rather than a genre in a strict sense. One of the coeditors, Héctor Fernández L'Hoeste, thus contends that “cumbia offers a vehicle of study unlike any other, p…
Envisioned, Ensounded, Enacted: Sacred Ecology and Indigenous Musical Experience in Yoreme Ceremonies of Northwest Mexico
This paper explores an ecological approach to the perception of musical meaning. Ethnographically informed by a Yoreme understanding of seeing and hearing as interrelated perceptual activities, this paper critically evaluates the concept of soundscape and the dichotomization and hierarchization of our (Western) perception faculties. It is a contribution to the growing number of publications with an integrative humanistic-scientific theoretical ap…
Giving voice to the 'dignified man: Reflections on Global Popular Music
As music increasingly links the global and the local and vice versa, fusions of diverse musical genres and styles burgeon. Globalisation theory (specifically Appadurai) has spurred explorations of musical hybridity and cross-fertilisation among scholars from different academic fields focusing on music. In this essay, I argue for the necessity of understanding global cultural interactions and musical appropriations or exchanges in the context of t…

Banda: Mexican Musical Life across Borders

Banda: Mexican Musical Life across Borders
Banda music has been performed by traditional brass bands in rural northwestern Mexico for more than a century, while technobanda, a newer style that has replaced the brass instruments with synthesizers and electric instruments, has become part of a lifestyle for tens of thousands of young people in the US, particularly in Los Angeles. The young people who flock to technobanda concerts also insist on the use of the Spanish language, a particular …
