The Individual, the Community and the Impact of Touring Film: Interviews with Jim Hunter and Others
The impact of the Highlands and Islands Film Guild is here explored through narrators interviewed in the 2010s about their experiences of touring film shows between the late 1940s and early 1970s. Centrally featured is the testimony of Jim Hunter, journalist, historian, erstwhile director of the Scottish Crofters’ Union and chairman of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise, whose testimony is analysed for six major narrative features – cultural an…
The Curse: Film and the Churches in the Western Isles 1945 to 1980
Focusing on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, this article looks at the interaction between religious culture and film between the 1940s and 1980s. Its first main feature is an examination of the causes of the closure of the Playhouse cinema in Stornoway in 1977–79 and the role of the Calvinist churches and the local authorities in this and other film censorship. It identifies a growing vigour on the part of some churchmen, notably of the …
The Media and Modernity: Film and New Media in the Highlands and Islands 1946–1971: Introduction
The Highlands and Islands Film Guild is briefly surveyed in this article that introduces the Special Issue on Media and Modernity. The foundations, principles and manner of operation are outlined, as well as the interdisciplinary research project. The article starts with a review of literature on the nature of society in the Highlands and Islands, and the way that researchers regard it as ‘the other’ in historical and ethnographic research within…
Museums' community engagement schemes, austerity and practices of care in two local museum services
In recent years, geographers have paid attention to the practices and spaces of care, yet museums rarely feature in this body of literature. Drawing on research conducted with two large museum services – one in England, and one in Scotland – this paper frames museums’ community engagement programmes as spaces of care. We offer insights into the practice of community engagement, and note how this is changing as a result of austerity. Our focus is …
Building soft skills in the creative economy: Creative intermediaries, business support and the 'soft skills gap
In recent years, the UK government and policymakers have sought to maximise the impact of the creative economy via a programme of targeted intervention. Intermediary agencies − those organisations that sit between government and policymakers on one hand, and creative practitioners and microbusinesses on the other − are increasingly seen as crucial to the functioning of the creative economy. This article reports on the activities of one creative i…

Inside a Cultural Agency: Team Ethnography and Knowledge Exchange
This article undertakes an auto-critical analysis of the research team's ethnographic study of Cultural Enterprise Office (CEO), a Scottish creative business support agency. We discuss the team's composition and how this relates to other analyses of ethnographic teamwork. Our research is situated in the wider policy context of the "creative-economic" turn in the UK's research funding. This has been accompanied by increased emphasis on "knowledge …
Doing emotion work in museums: Reconceptualising the Role of Community Engagement Practitioners
In this paper I investigate the practice of community engagement, and suggest that ideas around emotion work and emotional labour might offer new ways of thinking about the role of museum staff in community engagement settings. Through material gathered as part of an ethnographic research project conducted with Glasgow Museums - the city of Glasgow's municipal museums service - I show that community engagement practitioners routinely utilize emot…

Feminism: A Fourth Wave
The internet has emerged as an increasingly important space for feminist activists. Are we witnessing a shift from third- to fourth-wave feminism? Ealasaid Munro examines the history of feminism and looks at what contemporary developments might mean for feminist politics
Veil' and the politics of community exhibiting: Some thoughts from Glasgow
This paper is broadly concerned with community engagement as a facet of museum practice. The paper offers a reading of a community exhibition entitled Curious, held at St Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and Art in the city of Glasgow. I take the reader on a tour of the exhibition, offering insights into its form and function. I show how community exhibitions can pose challenges to traditional museum practice by disrupting taken-for-granted assum…
